I think we need to find an alternate way of distribution, because if someone reads digg or watches youtube or has even had the thought to do a google search for "scientology" before getting caught up in it, then that person is probably someone who would not be fooled or is someone who has heard of the real scientology before.
Lawls. People can post whatever 'Islam is a violent, savage religion' videos they want, but scientologists can remove any sort of criticism? A religion with some people within it who react violently to any sort of criticism or humor can't remove a video and a bunch of anal hollywoodians can?
Maybe I should have some crazy Mullah demand Google remove anything from google video that defaces Islam.
Somebody needs to come along and make a better film. That film had way too much dead space in it. Nothing really happened, and the climax was a lady opening a door to L. Ron's Office to find that it's a closet. The father never even seemed emotional about his daughter's death. Again, VERY good for an 18 year old with no budget, horrible for a professional.
While the quality may be low for some, this movie is a milestone in that it was made rather successfully by a young person plus it showcases some genuine problems with lower level Scientology. Just thing of it this way, one of us who is tech savvy or a good filmmaker/etc could make another. Bottom line though, the cult wants to remove this because it doesn't want people to see it. Thus spreading it to show that the cult can go f*ck itself when it tries to stiffle the truth is optimal
Ok, I'm currently 50 minutes into the video... and, allow me to say this. While I plan to continue watching, I'm bored out of my mind. If we are going to spread the word, we need to understand that we need a powerful and interesting example. This movie thus far is not as useful as the "Unfunny Truth about Scientology." I would suggest that you check the video out for yourself, but be prepared to be a little bored. I'll comment as soon as I'm done with the movie.
No Nitros, its the same film. What is important isn't that the film is fantastic, its that Scientology sees this little, no-budget film, by an 18 year old as a THREAT. And we should SPREAD this threat. If this can spur just one persons heart against the lies and evil of Scientology, it does its misson, and as YTMND'ers, people who care about freedom of speech above few other things, its out duty to make sure they are shown that they can't push people, especially those who create art they don't like, around.
Um.... not like I actually want to spend the time, but I have some pretty damn good connections and I too am 18. I could have made a better movie. The 6 I have made (short and to the point) are more interesting. If I wasn't at college, I'd gladly take up the challenge of making a Scientology Movie. Back home there's a Church of Scientology about half a mile from my house. It's probably doing well because it's in the wealthiest city in the state. Maybe next summer... or I could start over winter break
I just want to say, from an advertising standpoint. We could use more powerful footage, you know? It's interesting that you point out they consider it a threat. I'm looking at it a little differently. Unlike most things, the little guy stands a chance. If we could perhaps take it farther than south park, that would be amazing. I think, even if we can't help current Scientologists, we should at least prevent people from getting scammed in the first place.

I understand completely Nitros, and I hope that this definately inspires others to create their own Anti-Scientology films. They can shut up one or two low budget film makers, but what happens when there are thousands of us all throwing Anti-Scientology Films onto Google video, and YouTube?
They might be able to scare one or two of us into "submission", but they can't stop us all.
Exactly. The problem with Authoritarian systems (like Scientology) is that they topple more easily from educating the masses then fighting, action, diplomacy does... What this means is small frys like us have the power to actually do stuff. If I made a movie about Scientology, it would be a documentary. I think that a topic this big can be expressed in a documentary and still be interesting.
We need some Anti-Scientology Michael Moores. Crazy *ssh*l*es that can make inflammatory and intense films that involve them ambushing Scientology robots.
Hopefully without you know, the bending of the truth, or the assholiness. Just someone who can focus a lot of hate and anger at the Scientologists and make something compelling.
Cricket - should be someone with a near spotless record though as you know that the CoS will dig for dirt/pester the friends and family with the dirt and do other lovely things. (Well, if they don't find any they will make up the dirt, like they did when they tried to frame Paulette Cooper with the bomb threat in "Operation : Freakout") But I agree.
Thats 100% true. Or someone who cares so little about their reputation as to not give a sh*t.
Me, I got nothing in my background, no skeletons, no nothing. I was a ghost in high school, and other than a couple of jilted girlfriends and bad dates, nothing bad. I don't drink, don't smoke, never even talked to a Police officer except to ask directions.
Someone like me could do it.
I couldn't care less about this movie unless you tell me what its about. And no I won't look for myself because like I said, I don't care. The last thing I want to be doing is promoting some low budget movie that could be, and probably is, complete sh*t. Inform us. Plus why do you think scientologists had it removed from google video, youtube, etc? Maybe its not on there because it sucks. But I don't know if it sucks or not... I assume theres a bridge. Maybe people jump off of it? Maybe they don't.
The film stars several former Scientologists who left the organization. It is largely things they witnessed or had happened to them, basically a woman is dragged into the cult, and even though she becomes "Clear" she is still treated like a little slave around the Scientologist offices. It documents her story, as they slowly cut off her former friends and family, and take her for everything she's worth. She tries to leave, and ends up getting killed. Thats basically it in a nutshell.
But really, why would Scientology care if it 'sucked'? They care so much because they see the film as a THREAT, not because its poorly made. If it was a slopshod piece of crap film that they felt wouldn't warn anybody about their evil bullsh*t, do you think they would be doing so much to surpress its distribution?
If you pass this out at your school, people who actually go home and watch
this, will probably stop 10 minutes into it (if even). Just print out a
sh*t load of links to "The Unfunny Truth about Scientology."
It'st true. This video does sh*t. Better make videos on the Unfunny truth about scientology and post it everywhere.
The YTMND community could make a much more strikingly effective video
that is 15 to 20 minutes long, they would try to shut it down then we would just repost it everywhere. And it wouldn't have to be a sh*tty shortfilm like this one. It could be in "Unfunny truth" style but implementing the hilariousness of the whole XENU story + everything disturbingl.
I think that YTMND working on a video version of the unfunny truth would be worth it big time. There are so many things we could focus on rather than the few topics that Smooth was constrained too because of time constraints.
I think explaining to people when you give them the video, that this is just a film that Scientology is surpressing and that they should spread it around, and then give them links to the UnFunny Truth would be a good course of action.
I cant get over how sh*tty and boring this movie is. The casting is so bad. The father looks the same age as the daughter. The plot is incredibly boring. If someone gave me this boring stuff randomly then I would make sure never to speak to that person again, I'd be thinking that THEY are trying to get me into a cult.
Andriy - The "Disconnection policy" and lying shown in the video doesn't effect people? Sure this isn't the hard hitting stuff but it still shows some of the low level crap they do. Like lying to the father about the daughter/disconnect/etc. And the Clear ceremony in which they are not really given what they supposedly "earn" for their rank. Plus is shows that there is net-nanny software that is installed on Scientology machines that prevents them from looking outside for information.
Yea, it may not be the hard hitting movie we all need, but it is a start. This is a forerunner. Don't like the quality? make a better one. So far no one really else has... Think about that and let that inspire you to do one better. See, I really value this film for several reasons, the director had the balls to actually do something against the CoS and despite some of the direction, he did address some things that the cult wants silenced. So...
After just experiencing the most boring hour of my life.. I think it would be more effective if we infiltrated the church of scientology. Drop down a few hundred bucks, get in, work our way into the ranks... then f*ckin leak every bad and unpleasant event to happen in that sh*thole out to the media.
But I have a life (half of it is spent n ymtnd...) and I dont have any money so someone else is gonna have to do it.
Current records show that the membership is indeed shrinking, so the cult is compensating by usage of front groups.... Like narconon, criminon, WISE and several art school/tech school techniques. People are sometimes joing the cult not even being aware it is Scientology until it is too late. (because they hide their affiliation/lie to "raw meat" as they call them)
I just saw "the bridge" and I want my hour and 9 minutes back... its not compelling at all and I have no idea why scientology went after this (unless it IS close to accurate). Its not a documentary like I hoped it would be, but it really is just a movie... a very poorly made movie (yes I know, its indie). If you are curious, go for it.
I'm upset that this movie is being censored by Scientology - that really just isn't right - but the movie didn't really blow me away. The characters and the plot were, sadly, somewhat predictable. "OMG... it's a BROOM CLOSET!!" eh. And the main character seemed totally naive and deeply disturbed about the Xenu info, which is understandable since she isn't OT3, but wouldn't she know SOMETHING about it? The movie's message I agree with, but at the same time it was presented in such a black-and-white way.
"The Unfunny Truth" is a much more effective tool, but this movie could've been a very effective doc. Those orientation videos, and that video at the beginning - are those real? I got really excited and interested, watching that opening clip, but then the rest of the movie just focused on the black-and-white meanderings of the characters and focused on stuff most people already know about Scientology. It just didn't do it for me, really.
To all, you can also spread the Scientology "Orientation" video around as well. That is straight from the cult's mouth and showcases some of the nuttiness well. "You can choose to leave the theater and never mention Scientology again, it would be stupid but you can do it. You can also dive off a bridge or blow your brains out"
I watched the film. Wasn't pro stuff, but still very communicative. Kinda refreshing. Nice combination of known scientology info and scenarios. It is unfortunate that people aren't looking at Scientology as an example of the exploitive and predatory behaviorr that dominates our era rather than just "the badguy of the week".

"Brett says P.I's hired by the church have found dirt on him and he's looking at possible prison time. He wants this movie no where to be found and the whole thing to blow over as if nothing ever happened. This is "fair game" tactics by the "church" of Scientology at it's fullest. " What should we do...?
So that's what fair game is? Anybody who goes against their church - they dig up dirt on them and get them thrown in prison? Like do they go back and look at your internet traffic and find out youve been downloading music and report you for it? So basically anybody who has ever done anything wrong can't attack them? Thats BS. There has to be some way to get them? Isn't that like blackmail?
I'm not a fan of scientology but the movie was a waste of my time. It was slow-moving, oblique, and never actually functioned as the searing indictment of scientology it should have been. If I'm going to take time out of my life to spread this movie far and wide, as you suggest we do, the movie should be a LOT better and have more teeth.
I don't think its artistic merits has any real basis on if we should help to support its distribution or not. What are we going to do, do nothing to every film and film maker they attack? Only intervene if the film is up to our arbitrary artistic sensibilities? "UH OH! THIS ONE ISN'T CITIZEN KANE EITHER! BETTER LET SCIENTOLOGY SURPRESS IT AS WELL!" It doesn't matter if its 2 hours of the Director filming a floating turd in his dirty toliet. All that matters is that Scientology is trying to surpress it.
As i've said before, it may suck, but its the only rallying point we have.
I don't care if Scientology was trying to surpress Mein Kampf, I would still distribute it for free to fight them. The content of the supressed content doesn't matter, all that matters is that someone is trying to surpress freedom, specifically freedom to question and of speech.
If you don't like the rallying point, make a new better film, and get IT surpressed by Scientology.
