The events happening after 7 billion years assume that our universe will keep expanding. However it could also go back into a Big Crunch, or more controversial ending, the Big Rip. Gravity goes in reverse, because of dark energy's expansion, ripping everything to shreds right down to the atom. The Big Rip scares me.

Very well done. Although I do dispute one comment in the +3 Billion year era. There is good evidence to suggest that due to the enormous spaces between stars, very few (none, possibly) would actually collide, but would pass through with only gravity and electromagnetic currents shaping the resulting galaxy(s).

You assume we know how far away stars actually are. But that's probably (probably) true.

At the end I was expecting either an appearance of Jesus for his Second Coming ("Oops, I guess I'm a little late, lol."), or a mention of a nice steak tartar and salad at Milliway's, The Restaurant at the End of the Universe. This is ytmnd, after all.

OH MAN. I share your perspective, dude. I'm tired of these naysayers who cry that humanity will extinguish itself within the next thousand years or so. Humanity's potential to exploit the resources around us is LIMITLESS. We are destined to take over this galaxy, and even the entire universe before our time is up. Just think about what our cleverness has accomplished in the last 50 years - imagine what we will be capable of in a thousand years at this rate! Or a MILLION years!! HOLY FUUUUUCK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Two for effort, but this is such a vague interpretation of our "future." There is wayyy too much that can happen that will interfere with this estimated timeline. It leaves out even the most obvious of assumptions that meteors/comets/space debris will no doubt interfere with our future before any of these other estimations will. Even the most novice of scientists will tell you that there is very very little we can know/predict about what will happen.

Very well put together, but with the constant expansion of the universe, more and more stars/galaxies would be created, so how everything disperse? Also with all the supernovae would the black holes resulting from some of them eat the new galaxy? Good job though, this was excellent!

in regards to the andromeda collision, collisions between stars would be actually quite rare, consider the distance between us and the nearest star to us, which is many, many, many, many times the distance the stars themselves span. i recall seeing a model of how the sky would look over a long span of time as it occured, and basically, all that happens for us is a bunch of stars flying around randomly swirling. unlikely we'd die from it.

I doubt it will take "humans" 50,000 years to explore beyond the solar system. In 500 years we'll be beyond the solar system, and calling us "human" will be nothing more than linguistic convention, as we'll probably be more of a computer program running on some machine substrate, whether or not it looks human at all.

time and space are intertwined. think of a tablecloth. objects in the tablecloth, like galaxies and stars and planets, create obstructions - or indentations, more accurately - in the fabric of spacetime. large obstructions that "bend" spacetime can even bend light. if an obstruction is massive enough to "bend" light to the point of "breaking," then you've got yourself a black hole, partner.

One of the only YTMNDs in years that I've actually taken the time to log on, rate five stars, favorite, and pass it around. This topic has often been on my mind--will we as a race destroy ourselves thereby wiping us off the grand scheme due to our own petty bullsh*t? Or, will be reach the stars and flourish as an intelligent race that could potentially be so utterly amazing in all respects?

All these accusations make emotional people very unstable which inclines them to comment due to their strong beliefs. (my two cents) When it comes to the actual site: As intellectual beings, yes, this kind of knowledge is disturbing for the simple fact that we are powerless as to influence the violent sway of the cosmos. Earth; our home is going to be destroyed eventually and I think that's one of many things that this dependent life form-humans will have to deal with. (lol, psychology)

April 29th, 2010

Absolutely none of this is possible. Oxygen is secondary to our planet, Co2 was here first. Stuff in the ocean and rock/ice layers tell us that. Co2 is GOOD for the earth, no people, but the earth. The trees you drive by take DEEP breaths of it as you drive by. A single volcano can put out close to what humanity has produced, EVER. All of this stuff was in my science books etc as a kid. "Fossil Fuel" is another good one... Dino bones were found in oil deposits giving first birth myth to the 'fossil fuel' phrase, sadly it was pedaled as the truth by interest that seek to control every facit of your carbon based life. It was discovered in the 50's that 'OIL IS ABIOTIC.' Aka non-bio nature.

http://mondovista.com/abioticoilx.html

One thing that was not in my books though, is this 'tectonic shift' bologna. The crevices of faults such as the ring of fire, etc, expand. You can see the stretch marks on the ocean floor and measure it's rate of stretch with sonar and infrared satellites (creating maps with them and comparing the maps over time.) As the exothermic reactions take places under the crust of earth you are left with less concentrated but harder material with more volume. The causes planets, and yes EARTH, to EXPAND. It's doubled in size the last 110million years. Mountians are still made in the same/similar way, but the 'free floating Pangea' is just not possible. Pangea WAS the earth, it was completely solid (remember it has the same MASS but less VOLUME because things have not burned long enough yet) and the beginning oceans were pools. A particular rock when burned releases water, this is how oceans grew as expand. Just as the poles flip every so often, etc, there are many more things about how the earth works and space we would not begin to imagine yet!

We're on a rock flying through space around a huge nuclear reactor... Reality is stranger than

THE END: 3 possibilities. 1- if the density of mass and energy are too low, the universe will continue to expand and cool, and eventually will just be a vast cold nothing. 2- the density of mass and energy is high enough to bring the universe to a "big crunch," followed by another big bang, repeating the entire process over again. 3- we have no clue, and something we can't possibly prove or figure out from our place in the universe will take place. Possibilities include collisions with other universes, the not-so-all-powerful nature of our perceived laws of physics, or divine powers such as god, allah, jesus, muhammad, buddah, kanye west, etc.
