Guys! Look what you've done! Sure, this is cool information, but do you really think it constitutes THE BEST YTMND EVER? You give out 5's way too easily. 4 stars is not bad, don't be afraid of it. I'm very tempted to change my vote to a 1, but I won't, because it'll probably damage my reputation more than the site's.
September 18th, 2006

very cool dude, awesome choice of music too
September 18th, 2006
(0)
Im tired of everyone saying its "so old news", its a picture only 3 freakin years old..And ytmnd is a good place to get the info out there to people who wouldn't know this stuff. IMO, this 20sec vid with catchy music> semister long astron. class.
September 18th, 2006
(0)
"ytmnd is a good place to get the info out there to people who wouldn't know this stuff" That makes me very, very sad. But really, who cares? People didn't know and now they know... That still doesn't make this a good YTMND, let alone the best EVER.
September 18th, 2006

a most excellent site

Now, WHERE would I find Coruscant?
September 18th, 2006

That was great!
September 18th, 2006

wow this is still on the top? I thought ytmnd is about funny sites and creativity, not astronomy and power points. yep just keep hogging up the top spot. *sigh*
September 18th, 2006
(0)
It was neat, but I've seen loads of these macrocosmos/microcosmos YTMND's by now. The point you're making is indeed pretty amazing stuff, but as a YTMND, just.. neat. Nice job though.
September 18th, 2006

September 18th, 2006

Here is how to blow your mind: think how small the atoms that make you up are, then compare them to the distance between stars. But on a different note, doubt the galaxiesa re as big and *ss far away as it is said, we use inacurate, and unacurate equiptment. Plus most of these "facts" are assumptions made off a single image. nice job anyways

"this is pretty freaking amazing. but i couldnt read half the text. now, out of those 1 000 000 000 000 000 000 000s of stars, think how many have planets...now do you really think that we're the only planet with life on it?" The head of SETI has developed a mathematical equation determining the possible amount of civilizations. It's a product of several assumptions, such as "How fast stars form", "What's the probability of said star to have a planetary system", "The probability of said system to have conditions for life", "The probability for that life to develop intelligence". The problem lies in the last element of the Drake equation: "How long E.T stayed on the air" or "What is the probability that said civilization hadn't destroyed itself"
September 19th, 2006
(0)
The last element is truly a number to guess. Based on our guess, the product could be 0 or 10^12. We can't know the final element because we obviously haven't been contacted by extra-terrestrial life before. Also there exists a rather pessimistic "prophecy" (if you will) which states that the higher the techological level of a civilization is, the probability of said civilization to exterminate itself converges to one. That could explain why E.T hasn't phoned yet. Also c*cks.

This is one of the best YTMNDs ever. If I had a job, I'd sponsor it.
September 19th, 2006
(0)
Another smoothmedia powerpoint-presentation-in-gif-form? lol, grab a snickers.
September 19th, 2006
(0)
Being a fan of astronomy, I knew this all already, but it was put together really well, and "lol grab a snickers" cracked me up.
September 19th, 2006
(0)
People go on YTMND for entertainment, not just laughs. I think SM caught a large target audience here, thats all.
September 19th, 2006
(0)
You know, some of you people who have been known to say ratings aren't important sure seem to care about the rating of this site. Just an observation. :P
September 19th, 2006
(0)
And people have the balls to say we are the only intelligent life in the universe. You know whats even lamer? The fact I will never get to see any of the cool sh*t that is out there. FUUUUCCKKK I WANNA LIVE FOREVER!!
September 19th, 2006
(0)
^ POS, if it makes you feel any better, there is good reason to believe that everything we know in life is only the very beginning of something far greater. I don't use the term "after-life" because well, death is the beginning of something new, but that new beginning is not "life". Death is not a bad thing, though.

Smart.
September 19th, 2006
(0)
"IMO, this 20sec vid with catchy music> semister long astron. class." I've already explained my reasoning for downvoting. HOWEVER, if you need to go to an Astronomy class to find out that the Universe is big, then there is something wrong. After realizing that a lot, not all, of the people who fived this never knew any of this...I now realize why intellectual sites that provoke thought get downvoted........*sigh*

After watching this, how can anyone want to do anything other than devote every moment of their lives to advancing space exploration? In my mind, our existence is a race to see how much of that we can see and explore. It almost makes me cry to be able to see so much, but be unable to touch.

Space is fascinating, is it not? I hate your scientology YTMNDs, in all honesty; but this one is a winner. That image is the furthest image of deep-space ever captured. Just think about the possible life in those galaxies! Perhaps we are not alone! Oh, and I was expecting NEDM any second.

The funny part is, that pic baffled scientists who were expecting to see galaxies in their infant years because those galaxies are fully formed. The conclusion was, either they've drastically misunderstood the age of the universe, or the Big Bang theory is wrong.

Its so scary how many universes there are... just think of how many other humans, or human like creatures there are out there, just think about it theres about 0.0repeating billions of times with a 1 at the end% chance of there not being other living creatures out there... scary, makes me feel... so insignificant.

You must realize, that, by this time, those galxies have spread much further apart and probably encompass an are much larger than the tiny image leads one to believe. The paradox of this image is explained by Einstein's theory of realativity.

normally i like ytmnds like this, every so often, just to make you think and to take a break from the funny. but these kinds of sites have become some sort of fad i guess, because ive seen so many like this. and the really sad part is that the only reason this is on the top 5 is because it's one of smoothmedia's sites. come on, seriously. so its not that i dislike these sites, its just how you've, you know, been on the top 5 4,754,962,346,653,635 times, and had any other person (with the exception of mastersitsu, syncan, and max) made this site, it would have recieved 3 votes of a 2 and quietly filtered to the bottom of the ytmnd tank before anyone ever knew.

It's funny how small and insignificant our solar system really is, sometimes I wish they'd find a sun and solar system that is tiny compared to ours, you don't really hear about that.
