Consciousness proves existence (Descartes), but he FAILED to prove the existence of God, god, or gods. See: Cartesian circle. Also, I think you could question Hawking's assertion that the world came into being, as I think he backed out of that assertion and/or most scientists think the big bang is a cyclical event and not a one time thing. Unfortunately, the laws of logic are all based on the observations that men have found to be true throughout history. Okay, this is a great argument and as a Christian I too believe that atheism is a faith and that one cannot prove nor disprove the existence of God scientifically, but is it necessary to really beat down on obviously well-intentioned kid who made some really good points? This is a good site and I agree with you, but I really don't want to incite this argument anymore.
Y'know, I have "faith" that I'll wake up tomorrow morning, but is it a certainty? Nope. And so it is with religion. What makes you so different from the chair you sit in? You're both made up of the same stuff at the subatomic level. The difference is that you have a purpose. All of life has a purpose- to survive, evolve, adapt, consume, etc. I just don't understand how something with such great a purpose can come from something with no purpose at all. I'm an agnostic. In my opinion, God has a better chance of existing than not. Although, I have read the bible and researched many religions and have come to realize that if God wanted me to join a particular religion, he would given me atleast the SLIGHTEST proof that this is the one true religion. Why does the persuasive evidence of science compel so many to conclude that the unguided process of evolution accounts for life? If there is a cause and effect then obviously something would have to cause that. Also intelligence can come from unintelligence. Bacteria is a simple proof of this. But this is a pretty decent site. Well thought-out. :) Oh, and just because he says there's a "god" out there doesn't mean it's the kind you pray to and give shiny things. It just means that there's an external control of the universe that likely cannot hear the cries of the universe's inhabitants. Study things on followings such as Pantheism, and look at some quotes from Albert Einstein and Stephen Hawkings on this. Just because it says "god" doesn't mean it's the god you're used to; it's just a means of showing you the scale of the control.
After reading over the comments from both of these sites, I only thought of one vaild coclusion, if the Law of casuality exsists, then this creats an ever constant loop, If This "God" or Entity created the universe, Matter space and Time, Then what caused this Entity? Then what caused that entity, and the one before that, and the one before that,I agree you can't prove or disprove god, but how much sense does that make, honestly?

Or that things that exist, must be by definition part of the "Universe".
Your refutation is correct, but your conclusion is wrong. It is possible to prove a negative, but not through appeal to evidence. If the assertion (in this case god) is self-contradictory, then it can be disprove by appeal to logic.
For example I cannot disprove that cricles have four equal-angled corners (a square-circle) by appeal to evidence- I can't collect every circle in the universe and prove it. However, the disproof can be achieved using logic- but only because the claimed concept is self-contradictory and nonsensical. The concept of god is the same.
Hey souloftime -if not everything goes on the fundemental rules we have observed and live our life around, then whats the point of the logically aproaching the arguement? Logic is the rules and system of aplication that we take for granted, so if we can't aplly those rules and system to a debate it is unclear whether it is a debate or just a series of speculations. What this means is that being anything other than an atheist is not logical. It is not necessarily detrimental, but ONLY if you do not make any bad decisions based on your belief. First of all, to everyone clamoring for religion to be (for lack of a better term) banned from ytmnd's, stop. This is not a matter of religion. This is an exercise in logic that aims to answer one of the questions that has not been answered for all of our history and will most likely remain so well past our lifetimes. YTMND is a forum of sorts. People can bring up whatever subject they want, whenever they want, however they want, etc. If someone wants to ponder the existence of a higher power, great. If it sparks controversy and debate, fantastic. People are too inherently lazy anyhow, all they want is a cheap laugh and not have to do or think about anything.
The universe, and everything we know (and do not) know about it was god's grade nine science project. And he (or she) just like everyone else, threw theirs out after it was no longer useful to them, and has since moved on to graduate high school. Perhaps in college, he or she has a better project to work on.
Or maybe, god is working at some sort of galactic fast food place, flipping burgers or making fries for beings other being in exchage for some form of currency.
I think whether a god exists or not is the wrong debate anyway. The better question is: is there any reason to think there is a god? In this day and age, with what we know from biology, geology, etc etc, there's nothing other than ancient myth and superstition to make people believe there's a god. Sure, it's possible that gods do exist; anything's possible. But there's no good reason to think they do, imo.

Did you even think about this? You're pretty much saying that "god can't exist because nothing can be supernatural." Well why can't it? Because you say so? Whetstone proved that the universe had a beginning point. You agreed with that. So obviously something created the universe. This something would have to be supernatural, meaning independent of the universe (because it existed before it) and therefore not subject to its laws (because whatever "it" is, created said laws). In short, you contradicted yourself in a way that invalidates your entire argument.

Also, what is "the downs", you may want to remove things that aren't (are no longer?) in what you're analyzing, and quoting people in this fashion is not becoming of a site purporting "critical analysis". (Or if you think it is, I'll quote a priest saying God exists, who should have as much qualification as either of your quotes who implied one doesn't.)
So ar eyou syaing god is real or not? I"m kinda confused. Personally, I believe we live on as a form of sentient Energy, and god is a larger form of Sentient energy, and possibily one of the greatest scientific minds around. The Bible would thusly be given to us to help give us, the primitive humans at the time, a basic code of laws. Over time this was mixed around and such, or just misunderstood (Adam and Eve possibily, or that the whole story was made up). My whole idea is too long to type here.
I love how I came back to see what people were saying and someone actually said it's "dan brown's theory." More people say it's pushing a christian agenda... it's not... it's an ancient argument about whether or not it's worth being "good" in this life to avoid "punishment" in the next. IIRC it wasn't even about a christian god. It's just saying that if everything is caused by something else, you can go back to an "uncaused cause" take that as you will.
