Your Right, but as you said this also proves nothing, but neither did whetstones... So I guess we get to beleive what we want...

You were a tad too critical, in my opinion. You also brought your own opinions in, instead of simply proving that his was a fallacy.
September 7th, 2006

Sure. But my proof is my own consciousness. Some say consciousness is the mind tricking itself, but I'm speaking about how I'm able to look through these eyes. Me. I'm not a walking meat-machine. I have a real consciousness tied to this "body" (at least at the present). That's proof, and the only proof I've ever seen or heard of, and it's wonderful in its simplicity yet so simple that many people overlook it. "Cogito ergo sum" translated from the original "Je pense, donc je suis"

you win all my internets for USING BASIC COLLEGE LEVEL F*CKING LOGIC!!! everyone needs to take intro to logic if they ever want to argue anything in there life ever...thank you. and again...you win.

Consciousness proves existence (Descartes), but he FAILED to prove the existence of God, god, or gods. See: Cartesian circle. Also, I think you could question Hawking's assertion that the world came into being, as I think he backed out of that assertion and/or most scientists think the big bang is a cyclical event and not a one time thing. But, on your logic, bravo. Søren Kierkegaard has a lot to say about the whole reason contradicting with faith thing. Anyways, good job.

(The first comment was in response to FierogGT42). Also, you should not have said that you believed in god so you could call them out on their ad hominem when they say, "you're just an atheist, you wouldn't understand" etc.
September 7th, 2006
(0)
you could also use the argument that is everything implies cause, well then something needs to be prior to God. I hate this kind of drivel...honestly. Reason is not a proof of the non-existence of God, but it most certainly is not in its' favor.

YOU ARE GODLY! I enjoyed it. Its funny, the "you cant disprove it, so it exists" logic is funny, cuz you can just make up sh*t for retorts, like "well you are an alien, why argue? you cant disprove it, so naturally its a valid truth." Invisible Pink Unicorn punnnah!

You know, the whole point of religion is faith, that is, God intentionally doesn't show Himself and doesn't let Himself be scientifically proven so people still have a choice as to what they want to believe and what they want to do with their life. The only proof is in the lives of His followers.

Thank YOU! yeah... religion and Christianity are both logically and scientifically impossible. NO Whetstone! No arguments... that's it! IMPOSSIBLE. The only thing that makes sense if we do believe in God is to have faith (every normal Christian will tell you this). Now enough of this religion crap and lets make some Lazytown YTMND's, come on get to it!

Although I am not religious at all I quot watching this pretty quickly. You are trying to use logic to explain god/universe. Unfortunately, the laws of logic are all based on the observations that men have found to be true throughout history. However, human logic cannot be expanded to fields of knowledge which we have no experience. Therefore all the work you spent making this argument has just been countered by me in 30 seconds. kthxbai everyonefails.ytmnd.com

Thank you so very much. This restored my faith in humanity quite a bit. Too many christians have forgotten what faith really means, and you've provided a nice reminder. On another note: ultimacanti, you are retarded. Your argument here is "There's a chance you're wrong therefore you're entire argument is invalid." There are varying levels of factual validity you douchbag, and in a purely logistical way, this argument clearly debunks whetstone's.

Bravo, sirs! You have dazzled me. Just as I fived "Why God Exists" for containing no vitriol, so shall I five your rebuttal for its sound basis in science. It was true that many of whetstone's claims, such as the assertion that the universe must have been created by an intelligent being, were merely assumptions. To think I would find such even-tempered debate on YTMND!
September 8th, 2006
(0)
Though I believe in god, you have correctly pointed out the fallacies and have proven what can only be proven, that it is simply a matter of faith.
September 8th, 2006
(0)
well done...you forgot to point out his idiotic comment that after trvially labeling the cause of the big bang "the first cause," he answered the objection regarding god's cause simply with the analogy "would you ask who came before the first president?" ...I mean, lol?
September 8th, 2006

Okay, this is a great argument and as a Christian I too believe that atheism is a faith and that one cannot prove nor disprove the existence of God scientifically, but is it necessary to really beat down on obviously well-intentioned kid who made some really good points? This is a good site and I agree with you, but I really don't want to incite this argument anymore.

Y'know, I have "faith" that I'll wake up tomorrow morning, but is it a certainty? Nope. And so it is with religion. If someone ever comes back to life three days after they're dead or magically conceives a child, then I might give Jeebus more serious consideration. Until then, it's myth, and should be treated as such.

one of my new favorite ideas came from my friend who, in c lass the other day, mentioned that we have greek, roman, norse, egyptian, etc. mythology. these myths were all based on the religions of the masses at the times. ...why do we not have Christian mythology. it's just as illogical (or logical, if you're stupid) as all the other ones.

Interesting critique, as it serves more to say that it's foolish to try to prove or disprove a faith based religion. whetstone may have provided some simple reasoning that "fits" God into the scheme of the universe, but that doesn't count as a swaying argument one way or the other.
September 8th, 2006

I applaud and five your logic good sir. However, I am not downgrading from Atheist to Agnostic simply based on the inability to prove that God does not exist. I also can not prove that BigFoot does not exist, but I feel confident with the lack of real proof for its existance that it does not exist. What makes you so different from the chair you sit in? You're both made up of the same stuff at the subatomic level. The difference is that you have a purpose. All of life has a purpose- to survive, evolve, adapt, consume, etc. I just don't understand how something with such great a purpose can come from something with no purpose at all. Purpose could not have started by chance.

You realize that without facts and doing things through reasoning alone you can also make fiction into fact? Why just look at alchemy and see where that went. Also "non-intellegence cannot create intellegence" is a faulty argument. You're just showing us a view, not fact nor inductive or deductive reasoning. And in the end, it doesnt effect anything in reality anyway. Are you trying to convert us or somthing? Or just trying to self fufill your own thoughts and feelings?

I'm an agnostic. In my opinion, God has a better chance of existing than not. Although, I have read the bible and researched many religions and have come to realize that if God wanted me to join a particular religion, he would given me atleast the SLIGHTEST proof that this is the one true religion. Why does the persuasive evidence of science compel so many to conclude that the unguided process of evolution accounts for life? If the Bible is “God’s word” why are there so many real or apparent contradictions? Sigh

You fail. Causality only works if time flows linearly, the big bang created spacetime, not just space. Anyway, faith in something in which there is no evidence for is silly. There just as well might be a teapot orbiting Mars - does this mean we should all assume its true? It's no more likely or sensible...
September 8th, 2006

You forgot to add a part regarding "Can Intelligence come from non_intelligence".. Cus the awnser to that is YES it can. Does a sperm have an IQ? Does a Human Egg have an IQ? Yet combined they create a human ,that with time, will become intelligent.... or as in some cases, not!

This doesnt really prove anything...like you said of course. The reasoning is a tad silly...What caused the "first" cause then? If there is a cause and effect then obviously something would have to cause that. Also intelligence can come from unintelligence. Bacteria is a simple proof of this. But this is a pretty decent site. Offers something to debate about thats for sure

Well thought-out. :) Oh, and just because he says there's a "god" out there doesn't mean it's the kind you pray to and give shiny things. It just means that there's an external control of the universe that likely cannot hear the cries of the universe's inhabitants. Study things on followings such as Pantheism, and look at some quotes from Albert Einstein and Stephen Hawkings on this. Just because it says "god" doesn't mean it's the god you're used to; it's just a means of showing you the scale of the control.

After reading over the comments from both of these sites, I only thought of one vaild coclusion, if the Law of casuality exsists, then this creats an ever constant loop, If This "God" or Entity created the universe, Matter space and Time, Then what caused this Entity? Then what caused that entity, and the one before that, and the one before that,I agree you can't prove or disprove god, but how much sense does that make, honestly?

thanks for taking the time to point out every little turd in the other guy's presentation; but you do have to agree that "Omnipotence" is a self-contradictory concept, so we can always say that something "omnipotent" does not exist. Or that things that exist, must be by definition part of the "Universe".

Your refutation is correct, but your conclusion is wrong. It is possible to prove a negative, but not through appeal to evidence. If the assertion (in this case god) is self-contradictory, then it can be disprove by appeal to logic. For example I cannot disprove that cricles have four equal-angled corners (a square-circle) by appeal to evidence- I can't collect every circle in the universe and prove it. However, the disproof can be achieved using logic- but only because the claimed concept is self-contradictory and nonsensical. The concept of god is the same.

Hey souloftime -if not everything goes on the fundemental rules we have observed and live our life around, then whats the point of the logically aproaching the arguement? Logic is the rules and system of aplication that we take for granted, so if we can't aplly those rules and system to a debate it is unclear whether it is a debate or just a series of speculations. So if God defies logic we can't debate about him. Another way to the same point that this site is making.

I think I'll listen to people debate faith based topic into eternity." Does God exist? STFU! You can't prove jack people, this argument can not be resolved. People have been trying just about all of human history, and have failed to make a definant assertion. We, the retarded jabbering monkeys of this site, will not make any more progress than the millions of philosophers who went to their grave without a definant answer. What this means is that being anything other than an atheist is not logical. It is not necessarily detrimental, but ONLY if you do not make any bad decisions based on your belief. I, for one, believe that I am the incarnation of Baphomet, myself a creation of a greater being. But I'm not going to do and sacrifice people to myself for it. My judgements and morals are all based on amoral logic.

First of all, to everyone clamoring for religion to be (for lack of a better term) banned from ytmnd's, stop. This is not a matter of religion. This is an exercise in logic that aims to answer one of the questions that has not been answered for all of our history and will most likely remain so well past our lifetimes. YTMND is a forum of sorts. People can bring up whatever subject they want, whenever they want, however they want, etc. If someone wants to ponder the existence of a higher power, great. If it sparks controversy and debate, fantastic. People are too inherently lazy anyhow, all they want is a cheap laugh and not have to do or think about anything.

The universe, and everything we know (and do not) know about it was god's grade nine science project. And he (or she) just like everyone else, threw theirs out after it was no longer useful to them, and has since moved on to graduate high school. Perhaps in college, he or she has a better project to work on. Or maybe, god is working at some sort of galactic fast food place, flipping burgers or making fries for beings other being in exchage for some form of currency.

I think whether a god exists or not is the wrong debate anyway. The better question is: is there any reason to think there is a god? In this day and age, with what we know from biology, geology, etc etc, there's nothing other than ancient myth and superstition to make people believe there's a god. Sure, it's possible that gods do exist; anything's possible. But there's no good reason to think they do, imo.

Did you even think about this? You're pretty much saying that "god can't exist because nothing can be supernatural." Well why can't it? Because you say so? Whetstone proved that the universe had a beginning point. You agreed with that. So obviously something created the universe. This something would have to be supernatural, meaning independent of the universe (because it existed before it) and therefore not subject to its laws (because whatever "it" is, created said laws). In short, you contradicted yourself in a way that invalidates your entire argument.

So ar eyou syaing god is real or not? I"m kinda confused. Personally, I believe we live on as a form of sentient Energy, and god is a larger form of Sentient energy, and possibily one of the greatest scientific minds around. The Bible would thusly be given to us to help give us, the primitive humans at the time, a basic code of laws. Over time this was mixed around and such, or just misunderstood (Adam and Eve possibily, or that the whole story was made up). My whole idea is too long to type here.

I love how I came back to see what people were saying and someone actually said it's "dan brown's theory." More people say it's pushing a christian agenda... it's not... it's an ancient argument about whether or not it's worth being "good" in this life to avoid "punishment" in the next. IIRC it wasn't even about a christian god. It's just saying that if everything is caused by something else, you can go back to an "uncaused cause" take that as you will.
