The death of Garfield?

The death of Garfield?
An examination of a really f*cked up series of Garfield cartoons from 1989. These are 100% legit. EDIT: ok, thanks to everyone confirming the veracity of these strips.

This ytmnd would be nothing if it weren't for the music selection. You've got a good ear, man. Keep up the good work.

Yeah, those are real. I have the book. I don't want to think of Garfield as dead. I loved Garfield when I was a kid, so reading that was sad :'(

It's probably already pointed out by now but yes, they're real. I have the compilation book that has this. Oh, and BTW, if Garfield really does starve to death...I think this warrants............NEDM!

You forgot the mention the "Ebeneezer Scrooge" theory, which seems much more likely.

Garfield isn't dead, you twats. I remember reading this specific comic, I used to be a huge fan when I was little and read every Garfield book when it came out. This was just a creative romp that Jim Davis and co. went on when they realized just how shallow the Garfield comics are. THESE AREN'T f*ckED UP. When I was f*cking 11 reading them I didn't think anything of it, they didn't scare me whatsoever or anything.
(0)
i read those ones, it kinda of freaked me out. i think garfield is dead at the time of the comics o.0 well he should be by now
(0)
i think he is, look at how the last strip says he only has the option of denial, and then odie and john come back. i think he is dead, or is dying
November 10th, 2007
(0)
One thing, Jim Davis, being the Creator of the comic, has the full ability to say what is true or false. Not the fans. If he says it was a dream then it was a dream. End of Story.

http://garfield.com/comics/comics_archives_strip.html?1989-ga891023 I went to the archives to check it out. Garfield has their entire history archived on their site. Interestingly, the only way garfield is actually funny is if you pretend garfield can't talk. just ignore his thought bubbles and pretend jon can't hear them. Then the whole comic turns into a look at a really pathetic guy in the grips of psychosis ^_^

Gee-golly I hope so, cause then they'll stop making such sh*tty movies.

So f*cked up:X
August 4th, 2006
(0)
as far as i'm concerned, if he did live past that time, the movies killed him dead 50x over
August 4th, 2006
(0)
That's awesome. I've always hated Garfield for the incredible lameness of it. Recently the only jokes run have been SELF REFERENTIAL, in which the joke is nothing but a slight deviation from the things that have been repeated hundreds of times previously in the comic. Here's how the final comic should go: Jon finally gets laid (by a fat chick), Garfield becomes a nihillist, and Odie goes to college. Or some sh*t like that.
August 4th, 2006

Creepy and awesome, but -1 for jumping to death conclusions based on WIKIPEDIA.

August 5th, 2006

Very creepy. Its on the same level of disturbing as the fake C&H last comic and the Peanuts story arc where Snoopy leaves Charlie Brown (animated). As someone who has read most of the pre-90's garfield comics (including the 9 lives) I am going with the Scrooge theory.
August 5th, 2006
(0)
You have a point, no one does like Garfield. (Though everybody loves Calvin and Hobbes!)
August 5th, 2006
(0)
I think Jim Davis simply pulled a Christmas Carol on Garfield: Showing him what could happen if he continued to treat Odie and John that way. Of course, that could be moot because he went on doing it anyways, but this is sweet. I'd love to see him attempt a Drama comic, Jim Davis obviously has some genius.
August 5th, 2006
(0)
-2 for this being at least twice as long as it needed to be.
August 5th, 2006
(0)
I've seen other Garfield comics that can equal these in depression-inducing, but yeah... these are =/ Though I think the music made it worse than it is.
August 5th, 2006
(1)
My theory: Jim Ddavis lost someone important in his life and he showed it through these strips.
August 5th, 2006
(0)
I pretty much grew up with this comic, so I actually DO like it. Even the new comics. Though I've noticed the Dutch translations I read (cause those are the ones they sell) are better than Davis' original writing at times
August 5th, 2006
(0)
lawl. Garfield is in hell
August 5th, 2006
(0)
Yep, they certainly are real, I even knew which ones you were talking about before they started playing! That was a certainly depressing series that week. I wonder what the inspiration was.
August 5th, 2006
(0)
the official website has those strips in color http://garfield.com/comics/comics_archives_strip.html?1989-ga891023
August 5th, 2006
(0)
now that I look at the color ones, I like the black and white ones better. they make the place look much darker.
August 5th, 2006
(0)
Geez, I remember reading those ones. They were creepy back when I first read them. I personally liked the "Imagination" quote at the end. Good site, but I somehow doubt Garfield is dead.
August 5th, 2006
(0)
you got boingboinged!
August 5th, 2006
(0)
you sir, are a f*ggot.
August 5th, 2006
(0)
Creepy. Almost as if John and Odie arent real, and Garfield is just hallucinating the regular comic while dying alone in an old abandoned shack..
August 5th, 2006
(0)
The whole point of the comic was to show the concept of imagination within the authors eyes. Come on now :P
August 5th, 2006
(0)
Yes they're real. And yes, you all are a bunch of gullible conspiracy theorists. Jim Davis just wanted to make a statement about how ultimately we need companionship. This ytmnd, and those claims are wasting bandwidth.
August 5th, 2006
(0)
no. "explaining an esoteric theory" ytmnd failed.
August 5th, 2006
(0)
Alternative theory: EVERYONE in the house -- Garfield, Jon, Odie -- died a few months before the strip in question. Garfield goes to some sort of cat purgatory, returns as a spirit to his abandoned house. When he comes back to Jon, they're all in some alternate reality afterlife, where they'll spend eternity. That's the only way I can explain him being alive at 28 with that fat belly.
August 5th, 2006
(0)
Also: There was a story arc recently where Jon finally tongued with the hot vet chick. Garfield says in that strip that they lived happily ever after. There was a rumor they'd kill Garfield or end the strip there, but they're back to lasagna and Monday strips. A strip stuck in its time (the early 1980's), but I would :`( if Garfield were to die.
August 5th, 2006
(0)
This is more depressing than any myspace profile. I'm upvoting this, but I'm not sure why.
August 5th, 2006

That horrible music made it almost to where I couldn't stand it.
August 5th, 2006

Uhmm....
August 5th, 2006

The music was f*cking awesome for the theme of the ytmnd, so STFU.

Who cares about Garfield?? Anyways, I cried ;_;
August 5th, 2006
(0)
Hah I remember these, in fact I probably have it still have it somewhere. 3'd for reminding me of Garfield, but -2 for f*ggy slideshow.
August 5th, 2006
(0)
Wow, that made me think. Good find btw, even if it is as old as I am (the strips)
August 5th, 2006
(0)
It reminded me of the cartoon "The 9 lives of Garfield"
August 5th, 2006
(0)
The act of starving to death doesnt mean you actually died but you are on your way to it. n****r. 2'd for stupidity and wasting my time.
August 5th, 2006
(0)
wow, thats really insightful. i loved how the music picked up appropriately in the ytmnd.. great synchronization. maybe garfield's lasagna addiction is just to fill the void of starvation.

alright, he isnt dead, its his mind playing tricks on him making him think he is slowly starving to death....you took it out of context making it seem like he was dead.... cool comics though
August 5th, 2006
(0)
Garfield is dead, have you seen any recent comics of the past few years? They're all the same, boring things, nothing really funny. He's dead all right.

Oh my God. That's so creepy. Most definitly a 5.

There's no amount of downvoting that can justify the sh*t you just made. That wikipeda entry was obviously made by a f*cking idiot, and you're a f*cking idiot for trying to make a series of Garfield strips show relevance to the opinion of a tard.

last frame of the comic needs to last longer
August 5th, 2006
(0)
Pretty obvious that the whole "I'm completely and utterly alone" thing was a dream, that Garfield's imagination was getting the better of him - it's also obvious that the point was to teach the readers that you shouldn't take things for granted, because... what would you do if you didn't have them?
August 5th, 2006

Those were the best Garfield comics ever. It is sad, because I know Jim REALLY could have a great strip. I know he has the power to make much better then what he sh*ts on Garfield. He gave up when he made Garfield, and I think he might have been mourning that in those strips.

I like Garfield, he doesn't really do depressing stuff anymore, though he does occasionally do a week or so long continuation, or thematic set of comics. But depressing things arn't funny, really, that's why it's not done so much anymore.

If you read the article, it also says it's more likely to just be a twilight zone sort of thing, or a delusion. Or else Davis was just depressed when he wrote it.
August 5th, 2006
(0)
I have the book that has this comic in it. I was nuts about them in elementary.
August 5th, 2006
(0)
Nice presentation, thanks for bringing it to light... I used to read Garfield a lot when I was a kid, and I remember this series. It always kinda creeped me out. This along with "Garfield's 9 Lives" is good evidence that Jim Davis has a surprisingly dark side to his work.
August 5th, 2006
(0)
It was a spoof off of the Twilight Zone shows. Where a narrator explains the crazy stories of people who think everythings normal but it isn't. Garfield thought he was in a normal state of being, but he wasn't, and another blip of text narrated the entire thing. Twilight Zone for Halloween.

He's not real to start with, so he can't really be dead... but you still get a five for originality.

Its real. Completely real. I seen the comic in.. "Garfields fat cat 3 pack; the seventh book" which included hangs out, takes up space, and says a mouthful.. Hm. If im wrong about that, then its ham's it up. one of those ^_^

Best books ive ever read when i was younger, and it seems like that comicstrip in particular has uh.. made a horrible severe impact on me since i could remember it from long ago. 10 years + long ago.. t.t

I really like Garfield. Also i think i agree with the "spoofing Twilight Zone" theory or the "Depression" theory.
August 6th, 2006

Maybe you should change the line to "nobody really likes Garfield ANYMORE", emphasizing the current state of the franchise...the older strips and the cartoon were pretty good and popular. Regardless, this is some interesting stuff you brought to light.

They're real. In my Ultimate Garfield collection I remember that series.

He was sleepwalking cos he ate too much sh*t! ..yep, sleepwalking.. yes.. ..

Eating too much often leads to depression. I think Garfield is a role model.

Whoever upvoted this into up and coming should have their ytmnd account revoked.

Wow... This is a suprisingly deep YTMND. I used to LOVE Garfield back when I was a kid, the book, tv show, the works.. This is one of my favorite YTMNDS.. Cheers.

Garfield FTW.

Yeah, the problem with that wikipedia artical is someone wrote their opinion as a theory and since it's just a theory there is really no good reason to delete it. (Maybe someone could replace it with a more likely one).

Also, he isn't dead. "Depending on how we conduct ourselves today" when asked if he wants breakfast, he wants Jon. The vision seemingly changed his priority.

Is it weird that I feel worse for a cartoon character than I do the NEDM cat?

This site is on i-am-bored.com but they don't take credit for it. I don't couldn't see how he starved to death so I'll watch it again.

I'm not voting because I find this stupid. I remembe this vividly and it was done purely for halloween. All comics that week had that basic theme
August 6th, 2006

Also, that following sunday in the comic pages, they ended the series with Garfield WAKING UP from a dream.

And finally, considering that Wikipedia is user editable, who says that you didn't edit it to say "starved to death". You, my friend are no Einstein. kudos

What the hell, needs NEDM. I don't want to see serious crap on YTMND.

Funniest Garfield cartoons ever. Mostly because it wasn't "HAY G@RFIELDZ DONT EAT TEH CAKE!" then Garfield eats the cake and Jon is like "G@RF!#LD! I TOLD U NOT TO EAT TEH CAKE! YARRRRG!"
