They're real. But i think it has nothing to do with garfields death. Like he said "Imagination is a powerful tool" And at the end of the strip, there's a comforting scene where Garfield hugs Jon, telling him how much he is dependent on him.

I have an old garfield pillow case here which suggest that garfield is 30 years old this year. I had a quick look around about cat longevity, and http://www.best-cat-art.com/how-long-will-my-cat-live.html says "there are records of a few cats reaching over 30 years. These sort of ages for a cat are very much the exception however". Garfield. Exceptional?
