The death of Garfield?

The death of Garfield?
An examination of a really f*cked up series of Garfield cartoons from 1989. These are 100% legit. EDIT: ok, thanks to everyone confirming the veracity of these strips.

Damn it, he was dreaming. That wiki is needs to be edited. There is one comic in the 9 lives of garfield where he kills his elderly grandmother.

Interesting, but I hate these kind of YTMNDs. I'd much rather read about it on a message board. It just doesn't make sense to put this in YTMND form. And the star-ratings for these type of YTMNDs become pretty meaningless -- why would I give YOU a 5? This kind of thing isn't meant to be rated, it's just information.

I like this Jim Davis better; He writes comics that make me think every now and then. With that being said, I can't blame him for settling down creatively and just putting together tame unfunny crap, then accepting his fat syndication check. He's been doing this for a long time. Getcha money!

I happen to have these at home , and wondered the same thing. It maybe gives an explenation why garfield can talk to Jon sometimes, Everything is just in his almost to be death mind.
August 6th, 2006

I've got the book these cartoons come from. The order is different here, it's far less bleak and far more certainly a dream reel in the original order. Nice yoke though.

August 6th, 2006

Actually, I'm fairly certain that the cat who inspired Garfield died, and Jim Davis was stuggling to cope. Basically the strip was an outlet for him.
August 6th, 2006
(0)
So Garfield is a ghost cat in denial of being dead.
August 6th, 2006

I'm very much a fan of the fat tabby. However the cartoon should have run its course before 1989.

Interesting comics, incorrect conclusion.
August 6th, 2006

I checked Wiki. My guess is the author of the comic was getting tired and shifted gears for a moment. Consider it a disguarded story outside the contunity of Garfied. I say this becouse the author makes no ferther mention of it before retiring. I doupt ferther artists have any directions reguarding those spooky strips.
(0)
Yep, real, but I never really thought about Garfield slowly starving to death in an abandoned house. Dang, thanks for f*cking up my preconceived notions of reality in comic strips...

wow, i read downvoter's comments. the number 2 reson for downvoting was "the wikipedia can be edited by anyone" well it's been 4 days and nobody has changed the article on wikipedia and nobody repoted vandalism so therefore it's a plausable theory. Number 1 reason for downvoting...NO NEDM ZOMG. Does every YTMND featuring a cat need NEDM? NO so f*ck off and find a better reason to downvote if any
August 6th, 2006

And type in this date on garfield.com. It's quite real.

If it was a more BELIEVABLE conspiracy, this would be cool. But it doesn't leave wtih a question, only back in reality, with a newfound sense of appreciation for what he has. It was well made, so 2, but if you weren't trying to make it so dramatic when it's really a much simpler point then my rating would've been higher.

No, it was just used for a scare before halloween. i can quote why the creator used them in his 20th aniv. book. "During a writing session for Halloween week, I got the idea for this decidedly different series of strips. I wanted to scare people. And what do people fear most? Why, being alone. We carried the concept out to its logical conclusion and got a lot of responses from readers. Reaction raged from "Right on!" to "This isn't a trend, is it?"

I have these strips in a collection. I never thought anything about it implying Garfield's death, though. Still, not as messed up as The Nine Lives of Garfield (a weird collection my parents got me one year that was absolutely messed up in every way).

They're real, I have the book with them in it. and I always did wonder why this was in there, and I don't think he's dead, just that it was all his imagination or something.

(0)
Big deal. It was a dream, he is not dead. The Far Side pwns Garfield.
August 6th, 2006
(0)
Bah, everyone needs to stop hating on Garfield. They're just jealous because Jim Davis is rich from a rather dead-pan comic, who's humor is way to minimal for them, while they're sitting at home on the computer playing some game they obsess over, or trying to convince the world that their opinions are right, by writing in caps, using typos, and slamming the shift and 1 key to the point of annoyance. (Although I do agree, the movies did suck.)

Good stuff. If I can find the source, I once read an article where Jim davis commented on those comics, they were meant to be a moral narration...Garfield did not die, it was his imagination...Read the last strip.

+5 for a good find and quality site, but -2 for the lame "nobody likes Garfield" bit you felt needed to be added for some reason. Garfield has been around a lot longer than the lame *ss movies ya' know. But I guess the kids on this site wouldn't know that.
August 6th, 2006
(0)
So what is the dream? The fifth strip, third pannel shows he's clearly imagining as there is only an outline where he's pretending Jon is. And then Jon suddenly appears out of thin air offering Garfield some food? It's possible he was sleepwalking during a nightmare, or that he woke up in the morning and simply conjured up memories of better days to kill the pain of reality. There is no right or wrong interpretation, the *reader* decides whether Garfield is alive.
August 6th, 2006
(0)
I want to present a thought. The comic starts after John adopts Garfield. He was eating his preveous owners out of house and home. Maybe Garfield died before the strip even started and the entire strip is his afterlife denial.

I think you missed the point. It wasn't that Garfield died it was that he was not thanking others and thinking only for himself. It was a glimse of his life alone, which is one of his fears.
August 6th, 2006
(0)
I think Garfield and Odie are dead, but Jon can't contemplate with his loneliness and imagines his ex-pets. Wait, whatever happened to Lyman?
August 6th, 2006
(0)
The whole idea is many people whould live a lie and a delusions, and they fear the truth. This is another way to look at this strip. There are many possible ways to take this strip and it depends on the person and their own ideas of human nature itself. Another aspect could be that since he is infact alone, his mind causes a illusion of a life of happiness. Their is not ONE way to look at this their are infact many, so you can take your own and be happy with it.

The comics are real, but they don't signify that Garfield is literally dead, but in fact he is figuratively dead. He feeds himself with physical food and abuses those close to him, when in reality the true food he cannot do without is the companionship of his friends. When they are taken away, he realises that he has nothing, and "starves to death." Garfield is not dead, but how he takes his life for granted, he might as well be.

5'd. Excellent ytmnd. Different. You can/should update the strips tho. You can get them at garfield.com in color. There's a strip vault in which you can save the strips(with firefox). Helluva job tho.

I had Garfied comics when I was little, and I still remeber those strips. Garfied was being exceptionally mean to his owners, so this was a dream to make Garfield appriciative of his life. And after reading the comics after it, he does act more appriciatve and nicer. It was probly because the author was taking a nicer approach to the comic since kids liked it more. So you lose for not doing your research and highly misinterpriting this.

Why the hell would Garfield be dead anyways? He just got lost in his imagination and then some. But by all means, he didn't die!

Dude that was like, really deep. I guess Davis did sell out. 5 'cuz I liked it and to help make up for stupid downvoters.

I have the volume book this is from, and when reading it the first time I remember getting an empty feeling in me. It was depressing. The message at the end is good and speaks a truth, but it just makes you wonder...

Wow, this is a very well done YTMND site. The music fit really well with the total package, and for once, I'm not referencing Lex Luger.

Dang. Over the years it's become clear what a sellout hack Jim Davis is, but I didn't realize until I watched this that apparently the part of my heart that never grew up still had a real soft spot for Garfield. You made me very sad...

I'm certainly not a fan of the crap movies. Was a fan in my youth. Still have the books for posterity. If I may, I'd suggest putting NIN's "Right where it belongs" as the music. Fitting lyrics.

It was just a few strips about how powerful your imagination can be. That's all. And PLEASE don't mention the movies....there WAS NO MOVIES!!! *breaks down*

I have those, they're real. But I think it's just a miniseries, I doubt Davis meant anything as complex as Garfield reminiscing for the rest of the series as the point of that.

"It's depressing, but I don't see how he could be dead if Jim Davis is making Garfield comics to this day." Simple, all the garfield cartoons that are coming out today are just garfield imagining what life could of been as he slowly dies.

Jim Davis wrote this week of strips for Halloween. He wanted to try something different. Or so it says in the Garfield 20th anniversary book, "20 Years and Still Kicking".
