This is not the teaching of Catholicism, one of the largest religions on Earth, so your statement (that those who are using the free will argument are wrong) is based based on a false assumption. When somone commits a sin, it is not part of God's plan. The real question is: Why does God allow nature to cause suffering and death?

Most if not all suffering stems from either: sin or nature.
You cannot fault God for the sins of humans. So why should He allow natural suffering? I don't know, but perhaps we can ask Him if we meet Him. I'm not going to bitch about nature though, since it is simultaneously beautiful and painful and I think with the natural world you have to accept some risk and suffering.
