The symbol is for the word 'Ohm' which , if I remember correctly, is what Hindus believe to be the sound at the beginning of the universe (aswell as the unit of measurement of electrical impedance i.e resistance, but that's something enitrely different and has a different symbol http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ohm)
