I missed one very important suggestion in the troubleshooting list...setting the TV to Input. I thought I had tried that combination of hook-ups already but I had had it hooked to the VCR and when I had it on the TV input, it didn't do anything there. My VCR doesn't have an input option. So I tried hooking it up to the TV again and flipped on the input and it worked.
