If you think English is bad, try learning Japanese. Japanese uses like a dozen different counting systems. So numbers, dates, age, 3D objects, flat objects, paper, elongated objects, etc, ALL use different separate words for counting. I don't know any Japanese (my roommates take it), but you couldn't just say "I'm 21 years old, there are 3 forks and two coasters on the table, and I have 5 dollars with me". You would have to say, "I'm (21 in counting system 1) years old, there are

(3 in counting system 2) forks and (2 in counting system 3) coasters on the table and i have (5 in counting system 4) dollars with me. Now THAT'S a nightmare! Plus some numbers apparently just change when you use them to describe certain words or objects, (according to my roommates) because the japanese thinks it sounds cuter or something. So the word to describe 3 forks might not be the same word to describe 3 spoons.
