What's interesting is that this guy has almost precisely the same amount of 1-4 star votes, even though they're all well over a thousand each. As much as I like that voting behavior, I have to wonder if you're giving this a one star vote just because you're like Monk and need your statistics neat and tidy as opposed to actually having a valid opinion on the site.
the one thing i can say to refute your claim is i would have to be pretty insane to make hundreds and hundreds of votes just to be "neat". that wouldnt be any fun. it' s much more fun to actually put thought into your votes as opposed to just pushing a button repeatedly. i think most of the people on this site learned to vote playing nintendo
you have to know that the upvoters are ruining everything. they piss off good users more that downvoters ever did, and make them leave. these days, the good ratings have less to do with the quality of the site, and more to do with the people you know. it isnt good when EVERY week 3 or 4 sites are voted higher than the hall of fame sites ever were. the classics' good ratings are just getting spit on when any douche bag can head paste a koen site and get upvoted to the moon.
I love this site and I'm sorry if I left out upvoters as one of the problems. I agree, having to have a site be 4.4 to be in U+C is just as big of a problem as downvoters were. I still thinks this place can recover though. Honestly I can't imagine being in any online forum other than this one, regardless of all the f*gs here there are too many people that make this site great (or at least there were).
While this is a good way to get discussion going, most, if not all of this stuff has been brought up previously. What it comes down to is YTMND only has one real coder, sysadmin, administrator, person to deal with ads, legal complaints, etc. Plenty of the items on your list are reasonable, a lot are even in the TODO, it's just a matter of when they will get done.
That being said, I don't think we need more exposure until the site is capable of purging "undesirables" and I don't think downvoters/upvoters need to be dealt with unless they are gaming the system by having multiple accounts, as there aren't any rules against it and I think ultimately they even themselves out. If you average every vote on the site it is ~ 2.7, so it seems like despite all of the "dishonest" voting, things still seem to average out.
that might be true of OSX but I have experienced issues in windows XP firefox 2&3 and on a fedora virtual machine I run at work with firefox. I had to roll back quicktime on XP FF2 just to get it working again. I also wish they would do away with .wav formats all together as theese seem to be to blame for alot of the sound issues on sites and mp3s are not hard to make.
totally agree. I reeely hope max sees this or someone and does something about it...... though knowing ytmnd, nothing will happen. is it so hard to get som more moderators to take care of the site? I'm sure there's plenty of decent users who could do that job without abusing it. I dunno how moderating works exactly but comon
I have to admit, this is the first time I've logged on in probably a year... and there's a gut feeling that I have to say this: ytmnd is a great site, and I use to be on here all day long like 2-3 years ago, but now i really dont get on much. It's not that I hate this place... its just life. Sorry to break it to some of those that jerkoff to this site, but some people just foudn other things to do, lived there life, and moved on. It's the truth
A list site with a serious intention, I honestly was expecting #1. - NEDM. Thank you sir for proving my intuition wrong. In regards to the content, I say lets overload the core, run our asses off, and then start rebuilding again from the ashes. We could live in teepees for a while, at least until foreign aid comes to help us reestablish a working infrastructure...
Every website has those type of users and there is really no way to avoid them. Yeah, it is ridiculous that some users only vote 1 on everything, I agree with that, but overall there is no rule that says that you cannot one star everything, so there is nothing anyone can do about those type of users.
It is wrong to try to control and moderate how people vote. Alts need to be controlled not some stupid Hulk-Hogan gimmick account who attacks everyone once in a while. Even finding alts can be a problem because sometimes they are just friends, not alts. Frankly I find people who only vote 5s and 1s to be the bigger idiots.
Featured users need to be dumped and forgotten about. It's a good concept, but poorly executed. There are too many people on there that have no business being there. People with one or two good sites (meaning rated higher than 4.0) out of 20 should not be featured. Plus it brings too much attention to the user instead of the site.
featured status should be more of a revolving door, with people who, during any set standard amount of time (ie monthly) EARN featured status. if their sites continue to be successful they never lose status. if they suck, they 're dropped. i'm no smart guy, so i have no idea how hard something like that would be to pull off, so i'll assume that it's too much work.
Mods are the other tricky issue. You can't just let anyone be a mod. I know Max wants people he can trust and who will help with the site. Lets say the Britzman became a mod last year. Remember when he went berserk, created an alt and started revenge downvoting everyone who didn't like his sites? Imagine if he had mod abilities...
I have to say I agree with alot of stuff on there, and I think there are many new YTMNDs that I really like.
I'll find a site that's good everynow and they can be funny, but none of them have fads or anything.
Ytmnd is missing fads now.
NSMB, Batman uleule, Picard. nothing like that anymore.
The only fad I can think of ytmnd last had was Sparta.
I don't like the idea of deleting users who give over 50% voting 5, I like the sites I vote on and if I don't like one I just leave.
Not bad ideas. But you lost me on "Get more tv exposure". The kind of exposure you're referencing isn't the kind of stuff YTMND needs. We need more QUALITY users, not the *ssh*les of the internet. We've already got those. Also, max has addressed 1/2 this sh*t already. TODO list, motherf*cker. CAN YOU READ IT?
I agree with 3, 5, and 10, completely disagree with 9. I think featured users should just be eliminated. Also, if anything, maybe replace it with a customized "favorite users" where you could pick who is on the list. And yeah, I don't think we really want exposure do to sites like "JEWS DID 9/11" or a raid of a stupid site like habbo.
I would say instead of just getting more automaters, have a system that would ban you if you make all 1 star votes over so many votes, ban accounts that are coming from an IP that has several other accounts on it. Kills downvoting and alt spamming.
Better yet, delete sites that have a rating lower than 3 and/or views under 3,000 within a month. Don't need YTMND spammed with crappy sites ("artistic" bullsh*t aside).
Defintely get rid of the the featured users. I've clicked on many a featured user site, and I would say 70% or more of it is just random sh*t. I don't even understand why the exist. Is it because they made a few good sites, that most of their sites will be worthy? If that is the case, abolish featured users.
Do me a favor, Anig. If you really don't like certain people having the pink tag...don't respect them. Good YTMNDer's will make themselves a name, and they don't need a color to prove what they make is good material. You seem to be submitting to the "authority", simply because that's its intended purpose. You wanna fix YTMND? Stop everyone from telling it to play dead and act like they were part of something bigger once. People just need to move on from old YTMND. Its not coming back.
We still have the ability to make great YTMND's, and if anything, its easier now. The old community is gone for good, and most of the internet has turned away from creativity and intelligence in favor of retardation. That f*cking blows, but as long as you set an example, we might get things back on track.
Honestly, what's so wrong with YTMND as is? Saying that someone that votes 1 frequently is automatically a downvoter seems wrong. Aside from the occasional revenge downvote (which I'll admit to doing at times), I generally just vote 1 on things when I don't agree with the humor. Everyone has a different idea of what's funny, so 1's don't always have to be interpreted as a personal attack. It's just an opinion.
As for the whole featured user thing, I don't really see what's wrong with it. I don't like the idea of featured users, but they do exist, and will continue to exist. With that in mind, there's nothing really wrong with the featured user system. The only problem is the elitist crap that comes with people being featured. By making featured users change frequently and such, it'll just make people lose featured status on a whim, which is not really helpful to the situation.
Keeping in mind that everyone has different opinions of humor, the whole colored username proposal seems like an awful idea. Who is going to decide on color for users? Won't personal grudges and differing opinions be the basis of the division? Or is username color going to be based on average site rating, therefore making it vulnerable to downvoters and such?
While I'll agree that YTMND is imperfect and that things were better when there was more traffic, I don't really think there's anything that can be done to fix it. YTMND users will ever agree on anything long enough to make things better, and there really is no solution that serves everyone well. People will always have stupid grudges that stand in the way of change and such.
Personally, I don't agree with this proposal for the most part, since it seems to benefit the "opposing side" of YTMND to where I find myself (since I've been unfairly labeled as some sort of downvoter). I'm just saying that there's no way to satisfy everyone, and that it's a poor idea to widen the already existing rift between YTMND users. People around here hate each other enough already without needing additional reasons to feel the way they do. That's my two cents anyways.
How about this: make more fads that are not stolen from 4chan or end in "____TMND." Had some of the fads of yore been created today, we'd be seeing "BarrelRollTMND" or "StaplerTMND." THEY DO NOT NEED THOSE LAST FOUR LETTERS, PEOPLE. That's the equivalent of a forced fad, and a forced fad is as good as no fad. Also, encourage more simpler, classic sites. For people like me who don't know how to make lesser versions of flash animations or, as they used to be called when simple sites were the norm, "f*ggy
