The more i hear this fan fic the more i think it is a pinnical of english literature. The epic words "You are the demons." Maybe this means that he is fighting with the inner demons of his past caused by the traumatic experience past of growing up with his father. And that the demons within the base are all manifestations of the torment within his soul. Still doesn't explain why he was a zombie though. lol
