Well I wouldn't go and say I've got some kind of fan club. Mass appeal definitely edges out quality as a factor in a site's rating, I've noticed that over the years. Then there's the seemingly formulaic presence of folks adjusting their votes based on judgements of overrated/underrated (not to diss your viewpoint or anything, i've been that guy plenty of times as well). It would be interesting to see what it would look like at YTMND if a particular site's rating remained hidden until the user voted on it.
