That scene was sooo unrealistic in the theatrical version. Any gunner would've shot the pod for fun. Also, weren't they taking prisoners...so why would they have been shooting pods at all?

The reason they DIDN'T shoot down the escape pod in the actual movie is because they didn't detect any signs of life inside. They thought it was an empty pod. Come to think of it: R2-D2 was carrying the Death Star plans at the time! If something like that happened, the Alliance AND the Empire would both be screwed!
