You think that's bad... my girlfriend dragged my to yoga class and he was the instructor. It was an incredible session, no doubt -- I did some things I'd never thought physically possible -- but now my foot is behind the back of my head and I don't know how to get it back down.

Carib, this site replaced PeeWee with Morpheus. That means the punchline is interchangeable. We can now expect people to go down the list and make one with Milton, Willy Wonka (Fourest is making that one right now), Sean Connery, The King, and many other wacky fad characters.
October 25th, 2007
(-2)
What's critical in this YTMND is not the punchline. It's the setup. Our friend in the mirror believes his delusion isn't real. But his delusion responds with "What IS real?" and goes into a monologue discussing the potential lack of reality in things we experience through only our senses. There aren't many other characters in mainstream films that do this; they wouldn't fit nearly as well as Morpheus does.
October 25th, 2007
(-2)
The punchline, "Go away," just seals the deal: it's how most of us might react to a hallucination questioning our state of being. We can relate. We like the simple-mindedness of mirror man's response. We can feel the insecurity in his voice. We laugh. There's your lecture in YTMNDology, folks.
October 25th, 2007

I knew The Matrix was going to be involved in this site in some way based only on the title. If you make a site that has a punchline, that isn't a good thing. There's your lecture in Pedictablityology.
October 25th, 2007

Predictable, maybe (I personally didn't see it coming), but you can't deny that Morpheus was still a brilliant choice. My whole point is that the punchline itself isn't as interchangeable as you might think.

...and even these epistemological reflections are interchangeable with anything from let's say waking life or any philosophically inclined movie, and the real kicker is that this is not an original site, it's just a "tack on your epistemological/hallucinatory line and ship it to the back of the line." This isn't a new dimension to this site, it's just interchanging parts on the same dimension. Even the worst fad in history (staresintoyoursoul) was reinvented by its own author after the first site...
October 25th, 2007
(1)
by adding an entirely new dimension and completely re-contextualizing the entire site. I hardly think that basic epistemological musings from one of the most-watched movies of the past 10 years adds much originality to the site. Maybe it's just that I'm not that easily impressed by lines I've heard before and philosophical problems that I figured out in 9th grade and scenes that I've already seen before, but I don't see how you are either.

BAH. I dont give a sh*t if this is based off another site and theres ten jillion Matrix sites, the setup execution timing - all perfect. the PeeWee one was interchangeable, this one actually plays off the 'real' line. it all has a purpose and in the end yadayada says blah about reality and pretentious Morpheus = annoying 3am and f*ck you guys.

Maybe people agree, Carib. I mean, using every synonym and descriptive phrasing possible to make sure that we're not all using the same words to speak about the same phenomenon seems a bit much just to avoid some cool kid thinking you're just copying someone else. I didn't make up the phrase headpasting, but I use it to describe the same phenomenon that I find lame and tired. It doesn't make me cool, it's just useful to comment on how I feel about the site, seeing as this is a comments section.
October 26th, 2007

Yes and jumping on the bandwagon is so uncool and we'll never be invited to the cool kids' table but when you watch a movie and someone says that the dutch angle technique was overused and really took away from the scenes because they're always tilted for no apparent reason and you happen to agree with said statement and then other movies adapt the same overused technique and overuse it just the same and you now know what to call that technique, you will call that technique the dutch angle...
October 26th, 2007
(-1)
and when you state your opinion of that technique in the future, whether positively or negatively, you will call it the dutch angle because someone else called it that whether or not that is its formal name or correct name or not because that is how language works. Also, there is a phenomenon which I cannot remember the name of because sometimes language fails but it is akin to the "number" phenomenon where if you look for something you will see it everywhere. Similarly, if you are introduced to a new...
October 26th, 2007
(1)
phenomenon in one context you will likely see it in any other context you see it in and develop an opinion on it in each context and in general. And, again, this opinion may be in line with the person who introduced you to the phenomenon's opinion at which point you will, whether justified or not, be called a bandwagoner or if your opinion differs you will automatically become a cynic or a rebel or whatever it is. But, in reality, it all comes down to If it speaks/ And you can hear/ You should be listening
October 26th, 2007
(-1)
"It's possible, but when a whole bunch of people start saying the same things at the same time... you know they're just jumping on the bandwagon." If you're cynical, it means that you doubt. If you're a true cynic, you doubt everything. Which is certainly not a terrible position. To say that you KNOW they're just jumping on the bandwagon is not only not cynical it's actually positing truth. A cynic would say that it may be possible but there is no reason to believe it is actual. And that is my position.
October 26th, 2007
(0)
And, seeing as it's not that important, really, I'd rather maintain a healthy level of skepticism, take people's statements as the statements they feel like making, and move on. Perhaps everyone you think is a bandwagoner is actually mocking the position you think they are holding. Who really knows? All I know is that the words say what they say, and while they may look similar to other people's words, that doesn't mean that they don't mean them, or mean them in jest.

I think what you may be seeing Carib, is that people are starting to realize how fast fads are getting abused. True, it really hasn't happened with this site (it is only the second one). In the good old days (last year) fads could be around for a few months and still be funny. Now everyone wants to jump on the band wagon and fads are ran into the ground in days or in hours.

As far as the Matrix goes, I'm personally tired of seeing sites based on that movie. Even my love for An American Werewolf in London, can't make me like this site.
October 26th, 2007

Who said I was impressed by Morpheus's lines? I just think it's funny that they seemed to fly right over David's head. Maybe it's the fact that I've never seen The Matrix that makes this site so fresh for me.
