I like this one better... I have a vision of a utopia. Though we get more intelligent everyday our intelligence is slowly killing us. In my opinion it would be best if we didn't have the use of advance technology and started using stones, rocks, and wood. Though there would be no internet we would survive longer. Think of it this way.. we wouldn't have the technology to make our medicine but we would be looking at the greater picture which is saving this earth even if it is couple more years.

To start, i think these kinds of YTMND's are awesome. To those who 1'd for not being funny, go die in a hole. If you wanna be a unphilosophical retard who doesn't know a dam thing, go ahead. Personally if its ENTERTAINING, it ought to get some credit. --- My money is on nuclear warfare, though im a philosophical person and think the other ones are plausible, i would say in the political age we are in now. All it takes is a hairpin trigger. You might combat this idea by saying we have missile defense systems
April 23rd, 2008
(0)
unfortunately, our missile defense system are not perfected, and they are also not meant for about 10000 missiles at the same time. So in theory, a massive nuclear war could end us all.
April 23rd, 2008

I also think that we will probably find a way around all of this. The human race has survived all sorts of unlivable circumstances during their evolution to this point. So what says we won't keep accelerating? In like 50-80 years, we will probably be outside the galaxy. As you guys may already know, technology is accelerating exponentially. So we will be doing amazing things in a short amount of time over the next couple decades (conceivably). Nonetheless, i like all the ones that happen over long periods.

What about the human race evolving into a more advanced species?
September 10th, 2007
(7)
I think you need to re-evaluate the term "Evolve" before we discuss this point. The fact that Humans continually find cures for diseases and ways to avoid death at all costs is slowly eliminating the possibility of refining the human species or "Evolving" in any way.

September 10th, 2007
(1)
Well apparently I read very fast. However, I think society will be its own demise. In the world we live in today everything is wrong, bad or dangerous for some reason or another. People won't help broken down motorists because it could be a scam. No matter what you eat or drink it is unhealthy for you in some way. Sex is evil. Racism. Sexism. Religion helps the government and the government helps religion. In one way or another they want to deny you human instincts.
September 10th, 2007
(1)
As time goes on with the changes in society, morals and what is acceptable instead of evolving and innovating we will be blinded by fear of every little thing and be unable to cope with any new concept or way of thinking. Reverse evolution. Do yourselves a favor and raise your kids to think and ask questions. Before the world becomes to dumb and afraid to think or question.
September 10th, 2007
(2)
Do humanity a favor and don't let idiots have kids. Think what selective breeding could do. I mean, look at marijuana. It's potency have increased many times over due to planned breeding.
September 10th, 2007
(5)
That was what the whole idea of eugenics was about -- sterilizing mental deficients and so forth to prevent the human genome from degrading. Of course, to exert that kind of control over the population requires totalitarianism and a complete flouting of human rights.
September 11th, 2007
(1)
Not necessarly. It is also possible to establish breeding programs for people with "superior" genes to increase their reproduction and thus to create a separate human gene pool, "clean" from all influence considered negative. As soon as the current state of civilisation ends (which will most likely happen sooner or later), natural selection will do the rest (if you believe in it ;-)

You left out the "Children of Men" scenario, where mass infertility prevents the procreation of our species.
September 10th, 2007
(1)
In order to keep the YTMND from becoming not just a f*ggy short film, but a f*ggy feature film, I had to stick to the 20 scenarios in the Discovery article. The Exit Mundi link will take you to about 50 more scenarios, including the Children Of Men one.
September 10th, 2007
(4)
and you also left out mankind's greatest threat: enslavement by Conan O'Brien (also, the mayan calendar doesn't 'end' on 12/21/2012, it just completes a cycle)
September 11th, 2007
(0)
The mayan calender does have cycles but the last cycle reaches completion on 12/21/12 or at least thats how it was explained to me.
September 11th, 2007
(4)
According to Indigo Prophecy, the world will end in 2012 unless it is saved by playing DDR to win a Matrix-style wire fight.
September 11th, 2007
(0)
There is no 'last cycle' - the calendar has no end date. The winter solstice is the beginning of the 13th baktun, and no scripture says anything about an apocalypse - just the beginning of another age called 'the fifth sun'
September 11th, 2007
(0)
5th sun? OH SHI- that could be the superduper flare of the sun thing... crap I tell you what, seeing this made me realize we might all be pretty well f*cked before I get very old. The volcano one reminded me of how far on the edge we are to that sh*t. man I need to watch this again. "this is tits!"

NEW SCENARIO: Stephanie finally stars in hardcore porn: The resulting endless fapping causes men everywhere to be drained of their life-producing seed, causing the birthrate to plummet. In the end, humanity does not go out with a bang, but a "spurt".

September 10th, 2007

Is it wrong that I found this incredibly entertaining? Anyway, I'm not sure that religious end of the world scenarios should be on here, since they usually include a new beginning, eternal life for the righteous, and so on. And even if you don’t have any religious beliefs, there’s no reason to assume that the human race or even the universe itself will necessarily come to an end. We know too little to establish precedence… and those things are kind of unprecedented. Or maybe we know too much.
September 10th, 2007
(0)
Nice choice of images. Anyway, even though I'm not religious, I have to admit the apocalyptic scenarios proposed by most religions are rather... romantic, if not poetic. Who wouldn't appreciate the sight of mythical creatures destroying our world; angels, demons, horsemen, beasts, whatever you want to call them. Hey, at least it wouldn't be our fault. Not directly, that is.

September 10th, 2007
(0)
I would assume so. Shooting zombies would be fun, as long as i leave 1 bullet for me.
September 10th, 2007
(0)
Only way I could enjoy that would be if everyone I loved was dead... and everyone I hated were zombies.
September 10th, 2007
(0)
I would prefer the slow zombies though, fast zombies wouldn't be as much fun.
September 12th, 2007

If we're talking the clumsy stupid "Night of the Living Dead" zombies sure. If we're talking the semi-intelligent, strength enhanced, marathon running ones from the 28 days/weeks movies, than that would suck.

My perception of "All A Dream": What if you're all constructs of my own mind... Did I create this universe to my specifications? Did I build this while you are all just puppets circling around me, fulfilling my desires even though you don't know it? If I die, do you all die too? What truely is conciousness, but a collection of thoughts and ideas gathered in your brain and synapse? I know for a fact I exist merely because I'm typing this now, but I have no evidence you exist. The human mind is too complex.

I don't think the pole flip would be as devastating as suggested, but it would definitely make navigation interesting for a while. I'm still not convinced on the man-made global warming stuff. Mars has warmed by 15 degrees in the same period scientists blame the industrial revolution for our own warming. There sure ain't humans THERE to make greenhouse gases. I'd probably believe it more if there weren't so many Hollywood/Algore/Greenpeace freaks on board with the theory.
September 14th, 2007
(-1)
So you're saying your acceptance of a scientific hypothesis or theory is based not on any facts or verification via the scientific method, but rather by the type of people who subscribe to said theory?
September 21st, 2007
(0)
When said people have alterior motives, yes. Discredit or credit by association is how many theories and ideas are either rejected or accepted. How many people question Stephen Hawking's theories? Also, I implicitly discredit the global warming theories and ideas from those who offer no solution to our current "problem." Why is it that those of us who don't believe the hype are so often called ignorant? Seriously, it's f*cking annoying. The burden of proof lies with the accusors.

i know something about most of these, and you've greatly overblown their probability. Take the nanobots. Easy fix. Napalm anyone? Only real threat is global warming.

Wait a minute... nonliving self replicators on a molecular scale? I'd definitely go for Napalm over Chicken Noodle Soup and Excedrin.

I will never understand why everyone loses all sense of logic when faced with their own mortality. Whether its 5 years or 50, we're going to die - all of us - and its no big deal (or that big of a loss to the cosmos).

Almost all of the more quirky potential demises at the end there were all but cut-and-pasted from Exit Mundi, but still an awesome YTMND.

I like it a lot but you got so defeatist in the end. If anything logic, reason, and the human spirit will help us overcome or avert those - but we have to start now. PM FOR DETAILS, ETC> ETC>

AI with the capability of a human mind cannot take over the f*cking world. If that was possible, A PERSON WOULD HAVE DONE IT BY NOW. Also, it would have to be in control of some sort of large military asset in order to prevent a janitor from unplugging it. But even then, no general has taken over the entire world.

I disagree with the conclusion. If some unforeseen disaster doesn't wipe out humanity in a few centuries, then I would venture to say that we will never be totally wiped out. Even if a disaster like that struck Earth, once we have colonies on other planets, in other solar systems, in other galaxies, etc... then it really won't threaten the future of humanity. Some exceptions apply.

I don't think you realise just how fragile life is and just how little time humanity has actually existed. Why didn't you cite Final Fantasy XII as part of the sound source?

Because I wanted to post the exact title and the name of the composer instead of Final Fantasy XII- "Pharos Lighthouse". I'm being a bit egotistical and anticipating a possible spot on YTMND Soundtrack 18, so I wanted to make it easier for Fyrestorm in case he decides to put me on there.

Why don't you book a spot on Jay Leno while you're at it so you can discuss this site and the thoughtful planning of the music you chose and you can give a plug on how you are going to be featured on the next YTMND soundtrack.

I'll add another one - Canary Islands. Some scientists speculate that the volcanic region could be the source of the next "Mega Tsunami". The western half of La Palma island is structurally unstable enough that another large volcano could send an estimated 500 billion tonnes of land mass into the ocean at once. In theory, this could result in waves hundreds of meters in height, devastating European and American cities that border the Atlantic Ocean.

This sounds like JRPG boss music. Which kind of made me giggle about the Megaflare an Rogue Black Hole since that sounds like some stupid hit your whole party spell you see in those games. Anyway if I had to pick one I would say End of Days cause the Four Horsemen are pretty freaking cool. Though I remember in an episode of Hercules he beats them. Which didn't make sense cause greek legends didn't have anything to do with the Bible.
