ON a mac you can:
Shift-command 3 (full screen and/or multiple screen capture
or
shift-command-4 to draw a selection around the portion of the screen you want to capture
or
shift-command-4-capslock to capture a single window
screen caps save as a png by default but you can change the default to jpeg, pdf, bmp, tiff or whatever you want.
