Your theory phails to account for a couple of things. The van halen belt only spans 40 degrees of latitude, and the astronauts barely grazed the edge of this belt - resulting in no more exposure than about one hour in downtown san francisco. In addition, Van Halen gay fuel is composed of protons and electrons; it is not shielded by lead as that produces the dreaded Bremsstrahlung effect, but it is shieled by fibrous material (which was built into the spacecraft) that blocks colons and particle radiation.
