The poland fad is worse because when stupid people intentionally break the rules and post garbage sites it's one thing. When users who aren't complete morons post garbage in an attempt to be facetious and then get voted up by others for no other reason than to participate in a circle jerk it's just pollution. YTMNSFW is not for "hiding" anything but to let users decide whether or not they want to see potentially "adult" content.
Voting five on a site for no other reason than it follows a certain fad or because of the person who created it is pollution. Sites should be voted five when the content merits the highest possible level of achievement. Same goes for a vote of one. When you vote one on a site purely for one reason rather than taking in every aspect of the site, you are polluting as well. You are trying to tell me this site deserves the highest attainable score as well as being added to your list of favorites?
If its highest rated it means people are going to like it and nothing would please you more than to know the fact that people are going to come back if they like a certain site because they will be expecting more of those kinds of sites. I hate to say it but you dont define "great". "Great" is opinion, and no matter how loud the sound for it is, if people like it and they will come back to it, its great.
For example if someone spends 10 weeks on a site with the best remixing and photoshop job ever so it looks like a professional movie, but it still doesn't make me laugh or entertain me, I don't give it a good rating. I might give it a few extra stars for effort, but really. If someone just draws a few squiggly lines in MSPaint and puts a 3500Hz square wave for audio with text like "LOLOLOLOLOL" then that makes me laugh. I give that a 5.
I'm not trying to say my opinion is king, there is plenty of popular content out there that I don't like and don't voice up about. This fad has been done to death and you have an active group of people that upvote each other when they are producing content that consists of the same recycled material over and over and over. There are only so many times you can combine "forgot polend", "jon carry", etc. We got it a year ago.
I'm not going to vote up someone who spent 10 weeks on a site if I don't find it particularly funny or original, but if you are telling me a squiggly line and a loud noise is all it takes to make you laugh, how can you not understand why I wouldn't like that? It's not original in any way, and that's what it comes down to. By voting up sites like this you just perpetuate the stagnation.
It's the same as creating a site trying to make a joke about how much black people like fried chicken. Sure, hundreds of YTMND users will think it's hilarious. That doesn't mean it's creative or merits any real attention. It's just simple minded humor that requires no real originality or creativity. You can rag on the original YTMND plenty, it didn't take that much effort, nor was it particularly funny, but it was original. You can't honestly tell me the 4000th incarnation of "YOU FORGOT POLEND LOL" is.
I feel like the difference is even when users make Lazytown sites, there are some that try to bring something new to the table. While there are plenty of them that just rely on the same broken record that is a peodphilia joke, it's possible to create something new and original with any subject matter. I see the FPA a lot like Cthulhu138, they made something funny the first time, and gave up on trying to actually create something new so they continue to stick the same algorithm they were using a year ago.
Something is sort of screwed up in my head, and now, genuinely, the only ytmnds I like are ones like this. I've worried that it ends up looking like we're just creating a circle of people and voting 5 on each other's ytmnds so they get more views, but it's definately not what I'm trying to do. I'm sure I'm not the only one who thinks like that.
for me, fpa sites have always been about context, aside from the occasional person who might think that it is entirely a non sequitur, fpa, in its many incarnations relies on subtleties of...nevermind...
i dont really see the point in arguing over sites, the system allows us to express our opinions in the comment section but the ultimate avenue should remain the voting structure
sure, i can see the frustration of people who think fpa is headed (or already arrived) to a place where it is no different from other fads but at the core is still a philosophy of irony..and i think that is something that ytmnd is in dire need of and i vote accordingly
