Matlab is a scripting language used by Engineering and Mathematicians to develop numerical methods and to do tasks like digital signal processing, image processing, etc. It is often used to develop systems, and then once proven to work, they are efficiently rewritten in C or assembly. Matlab has great datatypes and support for this purpose, and is very well optimized for general purpose use.
