I stopped off at the U.A.E. when on a deployment. Unfortunately, we were not allowed into town.
Personally, I think what Dubai is doing is great. They can be a shining beacon as to what Arabs can accomplish if they would only embrace the 21st century, and give up the fundamentalist dream of reverting/staying in the 7th century.
HAY GUYS YTMND FEELD TRIPZORZ LAWL!! lol yeah we should all go visit sometime... fill up a few planes with a buncha knuckleheads screaming 'NOT EVEN DOOM MUSIC CAN MAKE THIS FLIGHT GO FASTER!' or some other silly fad thing people would do irl... lol, dubai. im down for a field trip, Max can supervise!
I went there and it was indeed crazy. I visited the burj al arab and they made me pay $50 just to go in to look at it. Turns out to rent a room for one night it costs $3,000. Although I guess the citizens of dubai can pay for it considering the fact that the UAE has no taxes, pays for all forms of eduaction including college, will give you a free house if you want it and pays you $300 a month if you have a child so you can support it. It's a pretty crazy place to be.
They have built a magnificent place to visit. They are in a good location as far as nonmilitary concerns go. Like a few have commented and people keep missing, this is them building a huge money-making resort for their own future. The irony is that, while in the US that would be stimulating the local economy like crazy, most of the UAE's blue-collar workers are imported because citizens get free sh*t and are college educated. Important families also own slaves!
there's only one reason i don't 5 this....you totally omit the oppression of the workers there, and the slave labour wages that they get. some workers aren't even paid at all. these workers basically live in their own sh*t, and for what? the world's largest residential tower? it's insane! read the most recent national geographic, then you'll understand the predicament these people are in. something needs to be done in Dubai...there's blood all over the buildings there...
Sooooooo... I suppose this kind of excess is the West's fault, too. I'm wondering (and not out of my own prurient interest, I swear) about possible prostitution, including the kind of "sex tourism" that Amsterdam and Bangkok etc. thrive on, and gambling and alcohol in this tourists' paradise. Hell, Michael Jackson already moved there, didn't he ? And we're at the tippy-tips of Arabia - across the peninsula are the Hajj sites, and right across the strait from Iran... Kind of embarassing...
In a way I'm comparing Dubai to Singapore - but Singapore has commerce, a huge shipping hub in the middle of all these cheap-labor countries, advanced infrastructure, efficient beaureaucracy... UAE/Dubai's claim that their economic boom isn't residual from oil wealth is ridiculous - so after oil, what do they have ? No resources around there, not enough space or labor for manufacturing... so it's going to have to be banking, so the super-rich play and bank in the same town. Talk about a bomb target !
everyone here seems to be "OMGZOR, DUBAI IS TEH SH*TZ LAWLZ!!!"...get educated people, they may have money, but they essentially enslave the workers there. Most of these people leave their fatherland to find work where they couldn't, and then they arrive and find that it is worse than their original country, but they can't go home because they spent their savings trying to buy a new life in Dubai. Read a little about it first before you decide you want to spend your family vacation there.
They're a bunch of genius's, especially with that "Dubai land" thing. It's going to be the BIGGEST farkin' tourist attraction in the world. It's already home to some of the most amazing hotels in the world, and if the city seriously gets to be that big in 2008, (which I don't doubt it will), they will have MORE than enough population to run it all and keep the revenue coming. It wouldn't matter if we completely converted from oil in 2009, that city will be the biggest on the planet by then.
I saw this on 60 minutes about three weeks ago. Yes it is truly amazing what they have done, however the workers that build these creations get very little money, have to live in squalor and have a very high rate of accidental deaths on the jobsite. In other words there is no concern for their safety.
No offense but you should also add things...
The UAE is basically the only place in much of the arab world where you can drink and gamble (except for lebanon)...saudi's go there all the time because the rest of saudi arabia is like a dry county....albeit in iran you could drink (illegal) but gambling would be hard to do.
Much of what you see might not last long....why not? Because what they are trying to do would be against the building codes of about 99% of the world.
continued - You cannot build skyscrapers on sea level and expect nothing to happen. Remember the city called New Orleans? Now I doubt they have hurricanes there but flooding can easily be a risk as would storms/sand storms. Also one should remember that much of this IS being paid by what we pay at the pump..
