"Bertrand Russell, in a lecture on logic, mentioned that in the sense of
material implication, a false proposition implies any proposition. A
student raised his hand and said "In that case, given that 1 = 0, prove
that you are the Pope". Russell immediately replied, "Add 1 to both sides
of the equation: then we have 2 = 1. The set containing just me and the
Pope has 2 members. But 2 = 1, so it has only 1 member; therefore, I am
the Pope."
a.)Assume 1=.9. b.)Let x=.9 Then 10x-x=9-.9 (8.1=8.1) c.) (from a.) 1=.9 (from b.) .9=x Thus, by the transitive property, x=1. If 1=.9, and 10x-x=9-.9 when x=.9, then 10x-x=9-.9 when x=1 (10-1=9-.9... 9=8.1). Since this is an outright contradiction, the assumption is false. (Any assumption that leads to a contradiction implies a false assumption).
