The goal of YTMND is to entertain and be entertained, and the ideal is that each person makes some funny sites, everyone fives them, and it never gets copied. The reality is, the internet is full of media referencing pop-culture, and when a phenomenon strikes, it's beat to death until it can no longer be found funny by enough people. Fads will happen, but this YTMND is a great example of something good that should never be copied.
I like how you say it's groupthink even though the group has no say on what any individual makes or hosts. Here's a more plausible explanation: Rather than paying 40$ for a week, 7 people could pay $5.50 for a day each because sponsored sites get old after a day anyways. Crazy idea, I know. It's almost like... the old sponsorship system. Look up groupthink and you'll find that we exhibit next to none of the symptoms. Too bad, too, it sounds fun.
