Fads can be fun...and foster creativity for the good users. Perhaps a better metaphor would be HMI somehow transcending FADS instead of crushing them. Well all know that is never going to happen. Also, I applaud your efforts to showcase your collective talents on the front page. There are a lot of quality sites that don't make U&C, however it is also true that at a certain point you make a name for yourself and people start to check your profile for new sites. Thus it is not the end of the world...
Of course HMI is a fad, they are like the kids that all shop at Hot Topic because they feel they want to have "originality" unlike the rest of the world but all it becomes is a bunch of people dressed the same. Then again, being Hiveminded all you are is a drone in uniform, so that's kind of defeating the "anti-fad" movement as well.
