Damn the downvoters are out in full fury right now. This should be at least a 4.3 for informative value. First, trying to stop the production of cassette recorders. Then shutting down file sharing services and suing users. Then invasive DRM which is moronic as it takes NO TIME to rip a CD and make unprotected files. Now this? Guitar tabs? What next, suing people for humming copywritten tunes?
PearLyrics an automated program that looks for lyrics (and tabs) of songs playing in your iTunes has also been KILLED for the same reasons http://www.pearworks.com/pages/pearLyrics.html
Luckily the program still works and I have a backed up .dmg
Next they'll be stopping autistic children with pitch perfect hearing playing music they hear on the radio.
This action is about as useful as the RIAA's challenge on stopping the downloading of MP3's. They just want to be put in the newspapers. The first thing you'll ask is "Why is the MPAA trying to stop something that has to do with MUSIC, not MOVIES?" The reason is they are being fed out of the hands of the RIAA. Big shock.

The record companies are so f*cking greedy. People are resisting the fact that we're moving toward a point where all information is free, and nothing of non-material nature can be sold. It will take a while, but it'll happen. It's similar to how oil companies don't want us to have electric cars because they won't be able to charge us for
Hm... Ya know, Cliff Notes synopsize whole novels, quote at length, & in fact, represent the original (c) work in its entirety but in an interpreted/abbreviated form... and THEY'RE very much (c) protected, under the principle that it's for educational purposes. Aren't guitar tabs like Cliff Notes for songs ? I mean, how come it's okay for copyrighted lyrics to be posted all over the net, and karaoke TV screens, ... but the guitar tabs are infringements ?
Wow, I haven't practiced guitar in a while, but after seeing this, I tried a couple of my old favorites: olga.net (OnLine Guitar Archive) and tabcrawler.com. Looks like they have also disappeared. Since there is no longer any content there, I can't directly prove it was a result of the NMPA, but I wouldn't be surprised. It is a sad day for music lovers.
As much as I support music and musicians, using tabs as a crutch can be something that most guitarists/bassists tend to do. If you keep looking up tabs, then you'll get dependant on them. The reason why the MNPA does this is because people are looking up tabs instead of buying the sheet-music. (Most of the time, they have tabs IN the sheet music) Besides, you know with the sheet-music that it's right. Not everything someone posts on a tab website is correct...
ultimate-guitar.com still stands strong, but this is a huge concern to me. I learned guitar from internet tabs, and I never would have without them. The only thing this "Ban" does is force up and coming guitarists to spend money buying tab books for the one or two songs they want. I would say this means War, but I do not know how to wage this one.
"If you keep looking up
tabs, then you'll get dependant on them."
Not really. Alot of people use tabs just to save time, and to make sue it's as accurate as can be. But yeah, as for the copyright thing, it pisses me off. In truth the sh*t you find in magazines is usually more accurate than the stuff you buy from there books. Many times these magazine are copied onto the websites, making them more reliable than these books.
I don't play the guitar and I find this absolutely ridiculous. It makes me so mad that something useful that can teach people to learn something is being taken off the internet. I would assume most of the people who use the tabs from these sites just to learn how to play the guitar better. I'm sure if any money is made off of the tabs it is a very small amount. This organization needs to get its head out of its ass. This is ridiculous.
