Honest to god I was expecting a tribute to Tom Cruise and Katey Holmes (aka, TomKat) at first glance. Like drinking juice when you were expecting whiskey.

Let's assume, for the benifit of the doubt, that this is an ironic comentary on the memorial sites for absolute strangers, as opposed to a mildly cool airplane.

The F-14 only gets it's sexy appeal because of the movie Top Gun. The F/A-18 is a far superior aircraft. If you want an aircraft that revolutionized carrier deck warfare, then you go with the A-6 Intruder.

who cares? I don't. Sorry, fighter jets being retired isn't a subject that reduces me to tears.

Reading the comments in support of the FA-18 makes me so happy. And YodaMoFo: Don't expect the hornet to retire for about another 20 years, though the Alpha model doesn't have long to go before we say goodbye.

* Sob....take me on your mighty wings...*sniffle......take me on your might wings....BWAHAHAHAHAHAH;( ;( *runs off and cries

It is a fine chariot, but where are ze horses? An excellent aircraft, both for its symbolic power and size, as well as its legacy in the armed forces. Kind of like retiring the old heavy Corsairs we used back in ww2 for newer, better aircraft.

You will be missed - beautiful.

RIP :(
September 27th, 2006

The F18 might be newer and more advanced than the F14, but the Tomcat is very easy on the eyes, the f18 is not so hot

Eh, I'm a Mig fan myself.
September 27th, 2006

f-22s ftw
September 27th, 2006

They made a beautiful successor to this aircraft. We will remember her as an age when carriers where cool and wings that moved where totally sweet.
September 27th, 2006

it's a plane for love's sake.
September 27th, 2006

No JET will ever be sexier than the Messerschmitt ME-262. But I love the old prop driven out of date bastards from WW2. P-40 Curtis Warhawk was teh sexarz.
September 27th, 2006

RIP.

Holy crap, that plane was as old as I am!
September 27th, 2006

WHYYYY!!!!! :((( (it would be great to have a wright brothers mockup of this lol) Tis a sad sad day
September 27th, 2006

Sad to see such an iconic plane go, but if the F/A-18 Super Hornets can be challenged by, say, a Chengdu J-10, what chance would a Tomcat have?
September 27th, 2006

Jesus. Thanks to lifeless, celebrity worshipping women, I expected Tom and Katie. F*ck you, Hollywood.

An awesome aircraft that will be sorely missed.......what other plane had cool features like adjustable wings? ;-) The F-22 Raptor is pretty cool though.
September 27th, 2006

September 27th, 2006

It kinda pissses me off that you out YTMND for the sound location. Have a f*cking heart and put its real name idiot: Amazing Grace. Being Irish, that hurt alot.
September 27th, 2006
(0)
An F-14 without any Top Gun music? I never thought I'd see the day... RIP. A good plane.
September 27th, 2006
(0)
Hey wakko1337 aka dickhead: If you would look at a Ytmnd-o-matic, You would see that it says sound origin, not sound name. Yeah, I know it's amazing grace and I like and respect the song; that's why I picked it. But I found the file on ytmnd, not on Amazing Grace, so i put down ytmnd. But I guess you wouldn't know that because you are a downvoter who joined a week ago with no sites of your own.

A sad day for naval aviation. I really love ro think about the B-52 Stratofortress though, it's been in service for 50 years, and the military is not planning to take it out untill around 2040, thats like if we were still flying Curtis Jennys or Sopwith Camels or Spads in Iraq.
September 27th, 2006

Those are from Ace Combat 5.

Enough to make me finally registar. Goodbye, have fun in the big danger zone in the sky.
September 27th, 2006

hungry eyes in the danger zone take your breath away as mighty wings go through the fire of your memories. playing with the boys while finding heaven in your eyes in destination unknown on those hot summer nights. sitting on the dock of the bay, losing that loving feeling you lead on me, top gun theme. i hope someone knows what im talking about.

redfrog, the "A" part of F/A-18 is the best part :(
September 27th, 2006

It makes no sense to drop 30-year-old tech even when they are still effective and most of the world doesn't have them, but then again they need something to waste tax dollars on.
September 27th, 2006

-4 cause the american army sucks ..... wow i can drop a bomb from 10000 feet real classy
September 27th, 2006

Well we could also strap TNT to our chests and walk into the nearest enemy mall, but don't you think that way would cause re-enlistment issues. I swear, some real idiots have been on this thread.
