oxyphenbutazone - an anti-inflammatory drug (trade name Tandearil) used to treat arthritis and bursitis. John Chew says that OXYPHENBUTAZONE is the highest-scoring word known under American tournament Scrabble rules (OSPD+MWCD). It can score 1778 under suitably contrived circumstances listed and credited in the Scrabble FAQ. An example of that play can be seen here. The highest-scoring opening plays are MUZJIKS (128) in OSPD and QUARTZY (126) or SQUEEZY (126) in OSW.

My highest score for one word on literati was only 249, but I don't remember what it was. I totally pwnt my friend though, they don't play with me anymore...
December 29th, 2006

You did it wrong. If played properly, that word is worth 1778 points. It's the highest-scoring word known under American tournament Scrabble rules. Yes, I am so bored I went and looked it up.

October 8th, 2007

How'd you get 450 with that play of oxyphenbutazone? Taking into account the 50-point bonus, double-letter score on the Z, and triple word score (which doesn't include the bonus), that's 3*(1+8+4+3+4+1+1+3+1+1+1+(10*2)+1+1+1)+50 =203.
