Jessica Simpson Isn't Original
Jessica Simpson's new song "A Public Affair" smacks eerily of The Smiths and Madonna.

Hehe, nice!

Songs sound similar, but not this similar. Sounding similar is influence, you listen to music you like and obviously you're going to generally strive to make music you like. This is an almost carbon copy.

cleaver... but question, who takes the time to listen to Jessica Simpson?

Should be called "Jessica Simpson's songwriters aren't original."

At least she's still hot.

The one where she sings "Boy I think I'm in love with you" is a far better example. She literally just rips the music from a 70s/80s song ( Not sure which one ) and sings over it. The lyrics don't even go with the f*cking music. It's terrible.

Put a picture of her on there. Include boobs. Thanks.

^ I told you, Kev. ;)

The difference is, however, her ripoff of John Cougar Mellencamp a couple years ago was a credited direct lift. In this case, the indirect lift is an even greater offense, because she's ripping off a whole sound, not just a specific song.
(0)
Has she even made one popular song that happened also to be original? Not just bought or plagerized?

Winkiestain has a point there. Jessica Simpson is a retard.

Something about that chord progression just really inspires mediocrity, I guess.

meh, most music isn't 100%original. Lots of times, artists take parts from songs from their favorite artists and put it into their own. why are you listening to jessica simpson, the smiths, and madonna in the first place?
July 29th, 2006
(0)
^ It's not so much actively listening to them (although the Smiths were pretty good) - it's just that at one point or another, each of those songs was (or is) unavoidable.
July 29th, 2006

well to be fair, Jessica Simpson didnt compose the music to the song, she probably didnt even compose the lyrics either.

The 1st thing I thought of was Holiday by Madonna. Nice catch on The Smiths though.

yes, jessica simpson is sh*t, we get it

Its pop music. Its not supposed to be good music, just catchy. When everything is in 4/4 with the same chords over and over stuff is going to sound the same.
July 29th, 2006
(0)
lol, you listen to the Smiths....
July 29th, 2006

( Response to earlier response ) Ah, I never knew that. In that case, 4/5. Good job.

"i somewhat agree. but really, there are so many songs that sound similar, so i can't 5 this" look up queen vs. vanilla ice
July 29th, 2006
(0)
^ again, that's different. vanilla ice SAMPLED queen and david bowie's "under pressure". anyone with ears can detect that, and i don't think vanilla ice made any attempt to hide his sources. the song in question here is much sneakier than a direct lift.

if you approve of Jessica simpson doing this, you approve of EBaum stealing.
July 29th, 2006

Didn't she steal a John Cougar song too?

^ see above.

old news... but 2 for effort

I doubt she had anything to do with the song except sing it, let alone come up with the lyrics, create the music, or any other stuff like that.
July 29th, 2006
(0)
^ then her songwriters aren't original, as someone 50 posts up noted. the pastiche involved, which is the focus of this YTMND, remains regardless.
(0)
It shouldn't take a ytmnd for most people to realize that jessica simpson is unoriginal. However, the same can be said for the majority of modern day musical artists, especially the popular ones. Afterall, "everything old is new again"

Add 'Music sounds better with you' by Stardust to your list, also take note that 'wearwolves of london' is near identical to 'sweet home alabama'... Think about it

Also i'd like to point out that Janet Jackson ruined both 'Ventura Highway' by America and Satie's 'Gymnopedies' in one horrible song. That is surely a bigger crime than this

5'd for truth.

Wow. Good job! Nice to hear the Smiths used in a YTMND, too. I wouldn't have caught that particular similarity. Excellent catch. Incidentally, Vanilla Ice DID initially deny ripping off Queen.

Lest we forget that these kinds of "stars" aren't the brains behind the operation-- for "A Public Affair", "The song was co-written by Simpson and Johnta Austin"- and we all know what that means. Bonus: Holiday, wasn't written by Madonna either, it was written by written by Curtis Hudson and Lisa Stevens. As to The Smiths.. well, I bet you can guess who wrote their song... - even still, your point is well taken and well researched. Bravo :)

Funny. When the music started, I seriously thought this is somehow botched up, because it's madonna. :)
