"Couldn't you have just put down one grass background over the figure, and pasted the other ontop of it in each frame?" The GIMP has a thingy (looks like some sort of stamp icon) with which you CTRL+click the parts you want to copy from, then click-and-drag to paint it over another part. Would've been an ass-pain with all the frames though.
