It's totally NOT possible in the NES, Original Gameboy, or any early versions of the game I've ever played. Perhaps the DS version...which looks like it gives you some type of countdown (color fade) to a piece getting locked into place. I haven't played the DS version though, so I don't really know.
Actually, whoever said it wasn't possible on the early versions of the game are correct. The NES controller ran off a very low clock cycle (which isn't surprising, but kind've is when you think about playing Mario.) I used it as a final project for one of my earlier college courses. I still may have the info somewhere.
