The sun is actually only halfway through it's lifespan, and I think it's actually not big enough to go supernova (didn't feel like getting technical earlier =p ). It's just going to turn into a white dwarf and burn off for a few billion years (it should start expanding into a "red giant" in probably 4 billion years).
As to their methods, they are engraving them on glass DVDs (ISO-9660 format?), and somehow sending instructions to build a laser powered disc reader that anyone from the future could just pick up and make because it's like the 'Rosetta stone' completley forgetting we knew 2 of the 3 languages on that stone already... Either drunk, insane or both.
I think I'll send them a link to this site so that they can all know that we didn't take it seriously and they'll be glad we're not around anymore because we're such douche bags.
50,000 years, though. . . man I'll bet humanity will be long gone by then if not through cataclysmic wipe-out then just evolution. We'll all be either dead or hyper intelligent brain-slugs.
