"He also deserves our respect, because, although a loyal German soldier, he came to hate Hitler and all his works, and took part in the conspiracy to rescue Germany by displacing the maniac and tyrant. For this, he paid the forfeit of his life. In the sombre wars of modern democracy, there is little place for chivalry." - Churchill
He was a nazi, he was in it through the end...He died around the time of D-Day that was like near the end of WW2...If he was such a good man WHY NOTHING ABOUT THE MILLIONS OF DEAD JEWS? He was more interested in playing soldier. He deserved death as much as any other Nazi. He was a true blue Nazi, the fact that he tried to kill Hitler means nothing...he could have just tried to seek power. Although no link has really been confirmed in his role for the assasination attempt. He is a nazi and died a nazi.
LunarHiro2002 your wrong, read on wiki he disobeyed hitlers orders alot, you know like the commando order.
Rommel was the greatest officer in WW2 For germany.do you see him wearing a swatista or armband no?
Why do you blame him for the jews loss? you point him out because he was aligned with the Axis is that all?
Hitler was behind the jews death not rommel and his wechrmacht troops ( the non waffen SS units which were not nazi )
Most Germans were not apart of the Nazi mentaility including Field Marshal Erwin Rommel. They went and support 'das Furher' for Germany's terrible treatment after WWI and the Treaty of Versailes. The Werhmacht was the Germany Regulars, most were not Pro-Nazi, at all. They fought for the German land, to get back what they lost and suffered for. They had no choice in the matter really.
The Waffen SS units and several officers were Nazis. They idlized it, proudly wore the swastika.
If Hitler had died early, and Rommel was Chancellor of Germany I believe he'd end the war in neogotians.
As for Lunar, most Germans did not know of the Death Camps. Only those in charge of those matters knew the purposes of the facilities. Also looking at German history book, I doubt it talk much on truths of WWII as it was a dark period for the nation.
Go watch the History Channel, where they have documentries of WWII and talk of how Rommel plotted to remove Hitler.
For those ignorant of history in here, read up on how Rommel died. He was implicated in the July 20 plot to ASSASINATE Hitler and was allowed to take his own life rather than go through a show trial. He was on the wrong side, but he nevertheless an honorable soldier, not a monster. People didn't call him the Desert Fox for nothing.
rommel was actually not someone who believed in the "führer" or his ideas. still he profited from the war to further his career and was also responsible for the suffering of alot of victims of the holocaust/ns-regime by defending hitler germany as well as leading attacks.
Might be true that he had joined some conspiracy but that was only when he knew the war was lost.
so i don`t care if he was nazi or not... he didnt do anything good. screw him.
in addition to that: almost everyone in germany knew of the concentration camps. but it was something which wasn`t discussed openly. after the war alot of people acted like they never knew because of a bad conscience and not wanting problems with the occupational forces. historical fact scientists agree on. i wish people would learn alot more about history instead of just posting their crap beliefs here
the desert fox a nazi? nah he thought hitler was a idiot and he wasa figurehead in the july 44 plot and was to become the leader after hitler was toast but sinc eit failed and he was such a dope commander he was the given the choice to commit suicide and get a funeral or go before courts and tried. next time read a book..bitch
Field Marshall Rommel was a patriotic and brilliant German soldier who was personally appalled by the atrocities of the Third Reich. To say that he was steeped in Nazi ideology would be to bring disgrace on a man who was devoted to his country and not to bringing about human suffering or enslavement.
Timble, that is precisely what the German authorities wanted the people of Germany to believe. By forcing him to die by his own hands, they took care of the problem of publicly implicating him in the assassination attempt on Hitler. He was a very popular general because of his efforts in Africa, and hence people would question whether or not he really did have a hand in Hitler's assassination.
In addition, for the state to order Rommel's execution would be unthinkable to the German people, causing possible unpopularity and disloyalty to the regime. Ultimately, Rommel had to choose suicide to protect his family from implication in the assassination plot- Had they merely threatened him, he would not have been so motivated. He took a fatal poison, died, and was given a funeral as a German war hero.
funny... my grandparents lived during that time and they told me that actually everyone knew their "jewish" neighbours went to the concentration camps. they also knew what happened there. they knew those camps weren`t normal prisons. in addition they knew that people didnt come back from there. people near concentration camps also knew that the white ashes during spring wasn`t snow. The entire Wehrmacht commando knew of those camps and what happened there, which is proven and rommel certainly knew of it.
besides: rommel was shot by an american plane in france when returning to the front. he was in his car alongside with parts of his staff. Search for some up to date scientific facts. also his part in the conspiracy against hitler is not really undisputed among scientists. at best he knew of it and let it happen. anyhow... it`s quite strange that this ytmnd reads "heil generalfeldmarschall Rommel"... wouldn`t that be a kind of insult towards him?
timble your quite disrespectful , you know nothing about rommel to say them distasteful things.
if he was such an evil guy was why he liked by many of his opponets like chuchill? etc.. can't explain that one can you?
and he was honored for attempting to bring down a tyrant and maniac the best that he could.
Not going to get into this too much, but, the problem with saying that /everyone/ who was a german citizen during this period is an evil nazi and responsible for warcrimes is that you then have to apply that reasoning to other things, which would make every US citizen responsible for Abu Grabe (SP), the CIA torturing suspects on foreign soil, and countless other things we've done. No country's hands are completely clean which would make the entire huamn race guilty.
THAN HAIL A MAN WHO DIDN'T OPPOSE THE MOST VILE MAN IN RECENT HISTORY JUST TO KEEP HIS LIFE AND JOB. Caps aside he deserves no respect. yes he was a good leader, yes in his latter years he opposed hitler on military tactics, but he still was a member of the nazi pary, and he loses everything for that.
i'd rather DIE than throw away my integrity for my life and job.
