The Explanation.
The inspiration for the artsy 3-letter sites did indeed come largely from klasky's "This is Not a YTMND" series. Please check 'em out - they're way cooler than mine.

I don't know why, but some of those sounds w/ pictures scared me quite badly...maybe it is just the 4 AM talking. Anyhow, 4. Mostly because I like the new sync system and you use it well.

by the way, IMN and BTH is a great way to keep yourself up late at night. I know I saw it when it popped up on the "Last created YTMNDs". I was scared, and was wondering what the hell boomaga was on.

All of them have been wonderful. If you could please give credit to the artists and musicians though, if only to allow me to search for more of their work.

You know, I just thought about it now. Everyone is going to make abstract YTMNDs after this.

Wow, you beat me to it. I wanted to do something similar to this...the "YTMND is for me" deal...and votes? Really, who cares. Thank you for the explanation though...I was quite curious. A YTMND with "meaning"...who woulda thought?

The only good thing to come out of this fiasco is that maybe people will start rating your sites based more on their content than by the name of their creator. (doubt it)

I'm guessing the three-letter titles stand for their subject. FCW could be "Face Catching Wind", NRY could be, oh I dunno, "New Rose Youth"? BTH, maybe, "By the Hand".

People coming in to YTMND hate 'em 'cause the site is thought of as a "fad site". Sites can be made about fads, but...
April 7th, 2006
(0)
...the idea is really (I think) to see what can be done with what max had to work with. Which explains why veterans hate YTMND Flash--the original definitely didn't have that, and it give rise to the synced "F*ggy Short Film".

i fived all of your three letter ytmnd's. i think they are the best ones youve made.
April 7th, 2006

whoa, hey, i respect the kudos to my series but they aren't mine. Like i try to show, none of the stuff i put together is made by me in any way. To be honest i enjoyed your series based largely on the fact that i was sure YOU made them.
April 7th, 2006

that being said, i am glad that more people are allowing ytmnd to be something broader than just humor. Frankly this medium (picture + text + sound) allows for a wide variety of purpose and i hope that these aren't the last you make.

I didn't think your 3 letter sites where bad, but I didn't think they where great either. But you do have to be aware of what YTMND is supposed to be, simple light entertainment that internet nerds can laugh at. It can't be too deep or people wont get/lik
April 8th, 2006
(0)
Or people wont get/like it. That's just what YTMND is and it's irresponsible to expect it to be something it's not. You can try to change it over time, but you can't just expect it to be whatever you want whenever you want.
April 8th, 2006
(0)
^^lol Aw.Bob. It's same with the music industry - everybody bitches about how boring the new stuff is, but the far-out stuff gets no play cause it makes radio listeners uncomfortable. Yay market-driven creativity.

April 8th, 2006

Heh, what I'm trying to say is that you have to try and grow YTMND to the style you want it, you can't just expect it to be that whenever you feel like it. Rock&Roll didn't start with Death Metal.
April 8th, 2006

I don't think you needed to explain em, but a great job anyway. I liked your abstract sites a lot, but wasn't sure how to comment without sounding either pretentious, or clueless.
April 8th, 2006
(0)
My god I commented a lot on that last one... Loved the debate, when it actually started up. Even after I got your explanation. And it's cool that your ultimate point was stop name-voting.
April 8th, 2006
(0)
And Cadrid, from what I hear, YTMND was started as a site to direct forum whores at to shut them up.
April 9th, 2006
(0)
And wow, it's kind of ironic to comment about how much I commented right after a guy who said he didn't comment because he didn't want to sound pretentious or clueless...
(0)
Those ytmnd's are brilliant. Don't listen to popular opinion, they lack vision. If I get to film a movie, I'll want to hire you on for your artistic perspective. That's a fact.
April 9th, 2006

I liked them from the start because they creeped me out. Especially the first one. Anyway, funny is okay, but it's nice to have art once in a while.

You can see that same quality in people who tend to make well-thought-out or intricate YTMND's rather than this sh*t with guys sucking eachother's dicks. You can really see the line on this site that seperates the men from the boys.

OK, Mr. Boomaga. I've had countless hours of conversations about YTMND.com w/friends and we always discuss the value of artistic expression and positive feedback. This site is all about comments and recognition, and the ability to handle 'NEGATIVE' criticism. When someone H8's ur sh*t, there are manifold ways to react, sometimes it helps you deal with this kind of reaction. And you dont HAVE to pander to the mainstream, but have to be relevant if you can, and

'teh funny' is a hard thing to do right. This site is not exactly an art gallery, and it wont function as one as long as the CORE audience is biased, and expects a humorous joke for their time. I have learned to work with this structure, and it can help to guide each site thusly. I like your sh*t alot.

I knew that the three-letter sites were just for you. I liked a lot of them, and kept thinking that everyone commenting was in for something funny when you finally decided to explain it. ^_^ Kudos, man. I like it.
(0)
I liked the purple swirly eye looking thing the most. And the first one. The first one made me sad, it looked like a sad shadow creature thing. V. Interesting. I'd like to see more, with less scary sounding music o-O; Or more scary. I don't know, the background noise just struck a bad chord with me this time around. Also, the bunny was adorable.
(0)
I never looked at the sites because I didn't know what the heck the letters meant... Eh. Personally, I don't think art's five-able or one-able. It's... art. You can't really vote on it.

I understand that YTMND started as a site with a unique sense of humor, but look at the current highest rated YTMND's,(anti-scientology), they're not funny and they have a purpose and a cause. I don't know how I missed all this, I don't really use the front page, I just go on some random trip through ytmnd everytime and usually find the stuff like this. Front page stuff sucks.

I like the sentiment. People should vote for value, not based on name: whether up or downvoting. YTMND is anything you want it to be.

I dig the art man. Keep up the good work, it's about time people moved out of the normalcy of life. Cheers to you mate.

Five on principle; my own "abstract" site, which is one of my best IMHO, is my lowest rated... lower than the intentionally broken one I made as a joke to see if I could force the abstract one to NOT be my lowest ranked. I may as well support someone else's more successful effort in the same vein.

"Never mistake lack of talent for genius" ... um. This really doesn't make any sense. Why would anyone mistake lack of talent for genius ? Don't try to be clever, boy - just say "U LOSE GOOD DAY SIR" or whatever, downvote, and move on.

'a f*ggy short film by that dramatic reading guy.' haha. amazing music, especially when it picks up for the insults and downvoting. props to boomaga for pushing ytmnd to the limit! we are artists, at least according to Frank Ahrens

i really liked your three letter sites. Especially NRY. i know how it feels to get downvoted too. i just made a YTMND making fun of myself and moved on, just like you did. its the best way to move on.

my friend here said "a big waste of 10 minutes" however i found it eye-opening and inspiring. Unique is judged by the general populace...which is full of morons. no score, but a *FAV*. (sorry bout my atrocious puncuation)

You sir, are an intellectual. That's good in this community and I award any efforts to push the limits of what a YTMND can be.

You're absolutely right. Tards only come to YTMND for "FUNNEH" stuff. They have no taste in art whatsoever. I liked all those abstract sites you made.

My vote is not necessarily on the actual quality of the site, but the idea for which it stands for. This is a sad yet true explanation of the mindset of YTMND, as well as quickly becoming the mindset of our culture in general; Instant Gratification is the name of the game, and forcing a user to think for longer than 5-10 seconds about a piece of work is simply absurd. Gone are the days where we were forced to actually use our imagination to interpret a meaning. Silly you for making them think. :D

Very good point, and very good music--which I'm sure helped this site survive and reach more users. Nothing wrong with a spoonfull of sugar to help the medicine go down.
