I did the same. I never really thought it was possible for harddrives to actually crash. I saw it mostly as a rumour. I lost 1 year of work, plus arround 6 years of documents that I didn't really need. Since then, I do backups. But it sucks, that is a fact. I can fully understand why the guy is pissed.
