Howdy partners,
Parts of the site have been slow or broken because the power supply in the master webserver died a couple weeks ago. I've ordered a replacement twice, and both times received the wrong item, so the site continues to be slow. The Flash template is ready for public testing but in order to get it all set I've had to go through the entire asset database and clear out all the broken and misnamed files before we start converting them all to be Flash-consumable.
I am currently deleting around 15,000 sites, including the deletion queue. Around 10,000 of these are sites with broken images or sounds. The full deletion could take up to a few days, during which the site will be extra slow while millions of bits of data are cleaned out of the database. Once the deletion is finished I will post up the list of what was deleted, as a large portion of the sites were made in the first few months of YTMND's existence so some pretty 'desirable' domains are going to be freed up.
The initial launch of the Flash template will be sans ads, but if all goes well it should be happening sometime in the next week. I'll update this post with any relevant information. That's all for now.
UPDATE: The list of deleted domains is here.

ID3 tags, while sometimes the cause of spacers, is in most cases not the cause. It is a fairly complicated technical issue with the way MP3 is compressed into frames. There is a lame encoder FAQ that goes into detail about it. At any rate, flawless loops with WAV will be 100% possible with the new player.
Max, i've just grown so tired of the fact that 95% of your news posts are you procrastinating about implementing some generic Flash crap and how you're looking for designers etc.. over and over again. Is this a joke? Do you think all news posts have to be "shop talk" about Flash content? For like two years every news post i've read has been "Hey (random endearing term) I just wanted you to know how the progress of the site's Flash resources have been going. Currently the Zapatista decoders are in need of
a change and currently right now I'm looking for some new developers, we have a great site you can put it on your resume". What ever happend to all the pizzazz max? I feel like i'm reading some tortured article from the generic section of engadget for the last two years. Maybe you could post about things more interesting or possibly thrilling? A trip to Mexico? A feature about your favorite chicken restaurant in New York? Think about it.
Hey Max, when are you going to deal with the mod(s) who mark everything NSFW? I've been here long enough to know what is considered safe for work or not. http://greaterthanall.ytmnd.com Two years ago no mod would have even thought of flagging this, but now they do. All because of the word "laid" used in the text. How is that considered not safe for work? No one would get fired over that.
I can't tell if this is a joke or not, so I'm gonna be overly helpful. I believe smoothmedia used Flash to make that particular YTMND you're describing. Keep in mind YTMND's aren't videos, they're a combination of an image file and a sound file. The image half can be made with several different image editing programs: Photoshop, Imageready, Flash, After Effects, Illustrator, Fireworks, 3Ds Max, Paint, and others. Keep in mind you can use more than one program,
for example using After Effects (or any other video compositing program) to create a video file, and another program to convert the video to a GIF for YTMND (there are better methods for this if you have Photoshop). Or you could create a 3D render in a program like 3Ds Max and touch up the image in Photoshop... (As a side note, nobody here uses 3D programs except for about 4 people, and most of them suck at it).
As for the audio side, you have several more programs to choose from, such as Wavepad, Audacity (both free), Adobe Audition, FL Studio, and others. FL Studio can be used for compositions and arrangements, while Audacity and Adobe Audition can be used for remixing and editing existing soundclips together. Wavepad can just do simple editing and cutting, as can all the others. An example of an FL Studio site: http://ytmndorchestra.ytmnd.com/ Example of Audacity/Adobe Audition site: http://objective.ytmnd.com/
For added effect, create a song in FL Studio and add extra soundclips (and edits) in a program like Adobe Audition. An example of that would be: http://dodgson.ytmnd.com/ (Though I think keaton only used FL Studio to make that, the point still stands). Then combine your FL Studio song with an After Effects/3Ds Max animation, for example http://theytmndfadmachine.ytmnd.com/
Of course you don't have to put that much effort into a site (most people don't). I'm just saying this to try and encourage you to create your own content, and not lazily take something you found elsewhere on your online internet connection. But if you like, look up tutorials for the programs I mentioned (and others...) on Google, or learn them yourself. If you need help coming up with an idea, here's some bedtime reading: http://wiki.ytmnd.com/Advanced_YTMND_Theory
Hey Max! We should have ytmndLIVE...ya know...like what youtube did... We could show off the talents of ytmnders... Like we could have...ummm... guys beating off to Stephanie LIVE...and umm...LIVE shots of guys sitting around in an IRC room all day...and err... live demonstrations of advanced photoshop editing...wouldnt that be exciting??
One major theme of ytmnd seems to be the gripe between featured users and non featured. I think I may have an idea that can not only relieve tensions (who really cares??) but more importantly, will fairly allow any ytmnd user the chance for a temporary showcase and exposure for their sites. Why not add a section to the main page (or a link) devoted strictly to the purpose of “showcasing” a random user? The model is this: a user is selected randomly and displayed in this box along with their 4-6 of their to
(continued) top rated sites. There could even be a space within this section where the user can leave a tagline or comment on the main page. The user could be “showcased” here for a day or two? There could even be a voting option to KEEP this user on the main page, perhaps with a limit beyond the normal random shuffle time. The YTMND community could vote to keep them on longer, but NOT vote them off (I think that aspect is key).
