welcome 2 my blog lol.
So anyway I've been seriously working on a recommendation in my never ending quest to avoid the moderation system.
After some initial tries in PHP it quickly became clear I had to move on to something a bit faster. A few days later and endless hours of refreshing my C++, and I have a fairly accurate prediction/recommendation system written.
It incorporates all the votes ever made and finds patterns between sites and the users that vote on them. After all is said and done, it's about 80% accurate and incredibly helpful for finding diamonds in the rough.
While it will take a lot more work to perfect it, it has a lot of promise, so I may be asking a few users to beta it in the near future.
One big issue with the system is that it will only give you accurate predictions and recommendations if you vote accurately. Rather, voting 5 on every site won't yield you good results, having a fairly even vote spread seems to provide the best results. So the next time you go to make a vote or downvote someone for making all those mean comments, think it through.
The more your votes reflect the actual rating of the content you are looking at versus who made the site and the circumstances, the better things will be for everyone in the future.
Also you may have noticed all the new ads, federated media is really starting to come through and land some real ad deals. This means that we will hopefully be able to get a couple more servers soon. Most importantly, the higher quality level ads means I can slowly start removing some ads so there aren't so many.
YFLY is sponsoring YTMND this week and they have a nifty little product called "Smack talk" which allows you to create shweet little movie clips and put words in other people's mouths. Check out the widget on the front page.

Some people are being so stupid about the YFLY thing and taking it way over the top, "CIVIL WAR OMFG." Just do what you have to do to keep YTMND and the servers going, and don't worry about it. I know a site like this is extremely expensive to keep running smoothly. I don't really consider it selling out; you just cant keep this site up anymore with donations and regular ad companies alone. Google ads just do not pay what they used to as well...
2:40 am I have been listening to Brian Eno sites for 20 mins, after keaton made one using the PTKFGS logo crying at the new YFLY ad. When all of a sudden I noticed one of the sites had a large white triangle in teh bottom left corner, made no sense to me but I figured what the heck, the creator probably had some kind of inside joke. So I check out another one, beautiful scene of space and again in the bottom left was this white triangle mentioning "Hair Creams and Male Performance Enhancers".
hey guys im going to put some more ads here for various hair creams and male enhancers because
really you have made it clear you want to see more and new interesting products, who comes here
for content anymore anyway right? well now that we have that settled i'll start putting up the
new ads asap. i dont think so tim

Red Bull killed the Unicorns. Drove them all into the sea.
UNICORN: Red Bull? What is the Red Bull?
BUTTERFLY: Hold tight. Hold tight. Hold tight, hold tight. ...(same strange
voice) His firstling bull has majesty, and his horns are the horns of a wild
ox. With them, he shall push the unicorns, all of them, to the ends of the
earth. Listen, listen, listen quickly!
It was great to witness what you are capable of max, I know this site won't ever go the way of all that other crap out there because you won't. We're always gonna be with ya max, no matter what. Even if you sell out to the man, we will still come just to find what you started in April of 2004. BTW Happy 3 Year Anniversary, ytmnd.com.
Say Max, I don't know if anyone has brought this up before, but have you considered that some of us might not have an even vote spread for a reason? I usually have time just to look at the top sites of the day, which are generally of a higher caliber than a typical YTMND (or at least they used to be...). Therefore, most of my votes are 4s or 5s, unless something really crappy finds its way onto the front page. Will this have a significant negative impact on my representation?
