death to (refresh)

Greetings all,
Today we have reached a historic milestone with the YTMND template. No longer will users need to refresh pages to try and get the audio and image to synchronize. Thanks to syncan (ironically enough), who wrote some clever Javascript and Flash, we now have the ability to ensure synchronization of image and sound, plus the benefit of sound working on any browser that supports flash.
Announcement YTMND is here.
UPDATE:Option added in your user options to turn off the flash preloader if you are having problems with it.
For the time being, this will only work with MP3 files until we can figure out how to convert WAV on the fly reliably with no spacers.
For those of you that didn't catch it, the game revolution contest is over. As is the Dew Army contest.

Awesome. I was hoping we could find a way to subvert potentially daring/challenging/interesting art into being nothing more than a f*cking television show. I was also hoping there was some way I could I could facilitate every creative genius who thinks they're they first guy to make a "screamer" site! Now I have both!
Ink, calculators have the ability to perform simple and complex mathematical functions, quicker than most people can by themselves...and also allow 8th graders the absolute joy and wonder at the fact that 80085 looks remarkably like the word "boobs" when input into most LCD screens. Take the good with the bad, elitist :)P
You make it sound like I'm anti technology. I'm against solving a problem that didn't f*cking exist. Do we really need more Family Guy clips and screamer sites and people posting videos they got on ebaums? Between flash, cheaper video cameras (including mad tech available at schools now,) web cams, easily pirated video software, etc, it's not like there was some critical absence of video capability. Anyone with a vision already had a ton of tools available to them. All this is going to enable is weak-ass hackery.
I'm not asking for high art. I'm asking for good humor. The problem with sites run by usermade content is that everyone thinks they're funny and very few people really are. I wouldn't put my own stuff near the top of the list by any means, and yet it looks like gold compared to most of the stuff cranked out here. If people were honest about stuff and were willing to publicly rate sites low when they're not any good, without worrying about their own scores, this place would do a lot better. But because nobody wants to rock the boat, we've got a hundred thousand people patting themselves on the back for total sh*t. And there's really not much worse in this world then unfunny humor.
Since syncan is an internet god, the next logical step is to make a firefox plugin that (1) refreshes lists of 'newly created' or 'up and coming' ytmnd's, (2) buttons for 'auto-stealing' a ytmnd's background and audio, and (3) makes YTMND actually work in firefox, so that sounds aren't broadcasted when a YTMND site is minimized or behind another tab. IMHO
ok some love it some hate it some want it for breakfast, why not upvote the old school sites and downvote the new loading screen sites or vise versa according to your tastes? afterall, people like to vote according to whether they seen it on 4chan, if its wow, if they think its a fad, if it is a fad, if they think they could have done it better, etc, not like you can pick a reason that is stupid anymore,-----downvote all sites below this line-----.
I think a little tollerance of mild animation is in order here. But I think everyone could stand to be a little more open-minded. Also, I am all for voting honestly, and not being afraid to do so, however, if you're going to do so, offer constructive criticism. Some people are just starting out and would like aids to help them improve their work.
"Billstickers," everyone falls back on the "well it's subjective" argument. Subjectivity is just an adaptation we have because of our disconnect with the objective truth. That is, unless you're READY to open the gates to hell and defend statements like "Fall Out Boy are as musically significant and complex as Mozart" or say "Radical Islam shows more respect to women's rights than Western secularism." When you start to see all the ridiculous sh*t subjectivity brings about, it's hard to stick to it.
The way I see it, this isn't a big change as far as site design goes. In fact, it'll probably be more of an advantage to people like me with sh*tty connections which mean that refresh sites never sych for me. To be honest I'm more a fan of simple picture-sound-text sites (and even if I had the technology to make a sync site I probably wouldn't do it much), but occassionally you get strokes of creativity on FSF sites. Anyway, to sum it up: this isn't going to cause an increase in "ripped from film/TV show" sites. The people who made them before will still make them now, only it'll be slightly easier for them. As for everyone who can't make sites sync, this'll make no difference to your sites. It's not like it'll magically make everything sync without you having to put any effort in.
True subjective opinion and relativity would never come into the hypothetical debates and arguments you state because if they were truely subjective no one would ever try to change anyone else's mind. Let me be clear, subjective opinion is a state of mind but as such it should manifest itself in ONE FORM above all others. Shutting the f*ck up. Because if one truely believes in the relative importance of all things, they won't try to change anyone else's mind.
I was never a proponent of gifs to begin with as it seems to defy the basic nature of YTMND, but with this new addition which will surely only support the short film makers, I'd like to see some sort of ytmngif or some such thing like ytmnsfw that only showed the highest rated and viewed classic style ytmnds that don't defy the refreshingly basic premise this site originally had.
I don't believe in objective truth, outside of scientifically proven and tested theories and laws. Anything other than something which uses quantitative values is at best a fact (used in this case as a scientific fact, which is not undeniably true, but a product of observation which is still subject to testing)
; a subjective opinion held by some collective of individuals. The only way one could say something like "Fall Out Boy are as musically significant and complex as Mozart" and have that be an objective truth would be if there weren't people in the world who actually thought that, as sad as something thinking that is.
The problem is that so many different thoughts and ideas are possessed by so many individuals, objective truth is nearly impossible to find or to provide for. However, there is subjective truth of a collective, which is all we can use in the place of objective truth, which makes it no less important, since it takes the place of objective truth. We must work with what we have. Individual perception is all we have, and through that, subjective truth of a collective.
Though my hat goes off to syncan for his clever scripting, this flies in the face of traditional YTMND. Yes, that's right: I too am an orthodox YTMNDite. I fear that, with this new advancement, we are approaching the end of an era. YTMND's traditional "Picture, Sound Text" format encourages creativity by virtue of its rather rigid limitation. For those of you still in elementary school, that means that you are more likely to be creative when you have less to work with. Though what inkdrinker would dub "f*ggy short films" were possible sans sync, they were much more difficult to achieve; thus FSF's were less common. Now that any fool with a .gif and a lengthy sound bite can do it...well...I hate to say it, but we may be approaching the end of the Picture Sound Text era.
ScndPistonHonda: you've never done anything to support the site and have always been one of the users claiming everything I do is selling out. I'm trying to solve problems when I see them, if you aren't happy with it why not try voicing some constructive ideas rather than constant criticism? YTMND has relatively few ads on the site, almost all of which are not intrusive at all. Of course I'm trying to make money, but I'm obviously not getting rich (or I would have quit my job by now), so if me putting ads on pages or adding new features that may draw new users is worse in your opinion than paying for YTMND hosting, then by all means leave.
If you're intentions were only to fix the problem, then it wasn't selling out and i'm sorry i said that. I'm just kinda pissed/disappointed at the moment that ytmnd has taken one step towards being like everything else. Whether your intentions are good or not, the effect is still the same (as if you sold out). If telling you the truth without kissing up and wanting ytmnd to prosper is not contributing/caring, then i don't know what is.
Make your own _fill in the blank_. Complaining about things, whining and crying are the suicidal emo kids' favorite passtimes. Many people get discouraged in life and end it because they're ignorant of the fact that life is what you make it, and they occupy themselves with why it sucks. Life is meaningless. YTMND is meaningless. See how little your outrage amounts to now? If you forget that we all have the capacity to make not only YTMND what we want it, but life as well, you lose, and shouldn't even be playing at these games. Don't like the new stuff? Close out of windows with loading screens/downvote/whatever. Don't make them, don't watch them.
