Although not especially rare in the Earth's crust, scandium is distributed sparsely and occurs in trace amounts in minerals, limiting industrial production. Fortunately, very little scandium is required to strengthen aluminum alloys. These Al-Sc alloys are used in a variety of applications, including handguns and golf clubs.
