Well if you had replicators and warp reactor drives to power them, then you could end world hunger and poverty overnight. Therefore, no one needs money anymore because they just push a button on the panel and make whatever they want. And you don't need to spend money on women anymore because of the all the holodecks and alien girls everywhere. Of course, the inventor of the transporter/replicator had to tranport all the lawyers and patent clerks into the sun while no one was looking.
Most theories of Economics, from Smith to Marx to Keynes to Friedman are predicated on conditions of resource scarcity; being able to replicate matter out of pure energy completely changes the foundation of everything, as scarcity is removed out of the equation. (Presuming energy is practically limitless)
The only thing I would imagine that does remain scarce in Star Trek is real estate, but even the effects of that would be largely ameliorated by being able to "beam" anywhere on a planet in an instant.
So it seems to me that communism or any other ism really fails to describe Star Trek. Besides, everyone knows that the Klingons were supposed to be the Russians.
