The Master System didn't do favorably compared to the NES due to the Nintendo system having a few years advantage on the market. Also, Nintendo (at the time) had a very draconian licensing system that basically forbid any company to make games for another system. Anyhow, the Sega Master System looks nothing like the NES. Just because it looks square from the top (just like the NES) doesn't mean it looks anything like it up close.
