maybe you both dont understand what god is

You're putting words into his mouth, whetstone might say "1, next please"

you sir win for having at least a some what decent knowledge and understanding of physics

I wonder if we can officially call this part of the "God" fad?

If he says anything substantially different from what I said, I'll revise the site accordingly.

YTMND: It's not just for humor anymore.

problems with this: 1.) to make it easy, we define everything as "the Universe". The opposite of "everything" is the Null (Empty) Set. Thus, if something "exists outside of space and time" = "it does not exist and it has never existed" 2.) a set is always a member of itself
September 7th, 2006
(0)
Who said God hasn't came into being? He has physically interacted with this world, is that enough of 'coming into being' for you?

September 7th, 2006
(0)
i would 5 this because i like the spirit, but you make correct statements supported by incorrect logic.
September 7th, 2006
(0)
icn, no, a set is not a member of itself. It can be considered a SUBSET of itself, but not a MEMBER of itself. As for the "null set," for the purposes of this argument it doesn't matter that that set is completely empty, since the argument doesn't conclude that God doesn't exist, only that Whetstone's argument can't prove it.

alright fine, if you distinguish between "member" and "subset", thats good.
September 7th, 2006
(0)
x514N, if God came into being, that's all well and good -- but that doesn't thereby save Whetstone's argument (nor would you NEED it, if you were right!).

verite, my stuff isn't explicitly anti-religious, by which I mean it isn't pro-atheism. I happen to be an atheist, but I don't wanna convince other YTMNDers to be atheists as well, because that would make me a hypocrite. No, I'm just responding to the Christbots that seem to have sprung up lately, thereby ensuring a level playing field.
September 7th, 2006
(0)
well, im christian and if i see those sites, most of which are horrible or stupid, i one it. I could throw together something too, but i like my YTMND funny, thats all

Fair enough, I suppose.

Why this ytmnd is flawed. GOD IS NOT A HUMAN.
September 7th, 2006
(0)
Yeah. So?
September 7th, 2006
(0)
So? You said something like god stepped out of the time something something, so he wouldn't have the time to create the universe!" He's god, not a human, the laws of physics, gravity, time, and all that other stuff DOESN'T apply to him, you're using human logic, and applying it to god, what I'm trying to say is that human logic doesn't apply to God.
September 7th, 2006
(0)
yo guys god is a sentient being up in the clouds of space lol
September 7th, 2006
(0)
If you can't use logic, whats the damn point of arguing at all? You can't argue (effectively) about how logic doesn't work in some instances without using logic in your own statement. FTW.
September 7th, 2006
(0)
if laws of physics don't apply to God, then he can not interact with the Universe. if he can not interact with the Universe, he is not part of the Universe, and thus does not exist.
September 7th, 2006

heh heh...nice. I'll five you for promoting me. Any press is good press.
September 7th, 2006

every hard question pointed towards the flaws in a theistic world view ends in the same answer. "magic." If everything has a cause, then what caused god? how is god the only thing that has no cause? because he's god, and god is magic.

"Considering the marvelous complexity of the universe...matter, energy, gravity, time, dimensions... I believe that our existence must be more than either of you philosophers." ;)

In the end, God is perfectly and logically POSSIBLE, but cannot be proven to exist or not to exist. But, at the least, this can shut moronic right-wing morons up.
September 7th, 2006

I like how the only response theists can give to this is "GOD DID IT, WHY? BECAUSE HE IS GOD!"..that of course is begging the question, or some other logical fallacy...or just plain stupidity.

I love a good debate - especially by an intelligent guy.
September 7th, 2006
(0)
5'd because Whetstone or whatever his name is is an idiot. 1 because I'm Christian. Look, you're using human knowledge to try and justify the existence of a supernatural being. Humans do not have the mental capacity to understand such things, such as "God does not suffer from laws that govern the universe". Humans, when trying to think of eternity, have a hard time as well. We just don't have the mental prowess to prove/disprove the existence of God.

September 7th, 2006

Putting words in someone else's mouth is a basic no-no in debating. Also, if a creater creates something, doesnt that mean he is over it? The question where God came from is valid. Yet I find it much more likely that a superior being created us, rather than we evolved and had such amazing luck that we evolved and have our body that is so complex, its almost impossible by chance.
September 7th, 2006

Mindf*ck. @_@
September 7th, 2006
(0)
Non-Beilievers run the internet. That is a great track you put together.
September 7th, 2006
(0)
Your argument is just as pointless as Whetstone's, though I think trying to verbalize it, as he did, is worth something. The fact is, though, and a few ppl on this page have said it already, you can't prove God exists. You can't prove he doesn't. The laws of physics as we know it break down at the Big Bang Singularity. We don't and can't know what happened prior to the Big Bang (if the word 'prior' can even be used), so everyone should stop arguing.
September 7th, 2006
(0)
Also, creating a ytmnd for the sole purpose of tearing another, rather well-made if slightly erroneous, ytmnd down. There's not point, cuz your argument isn't better than his, in fact its worse because you use big words that you probably don't understand. thats why you get a 1

I agree with these objections. I also don't beleive it's possible to either logically prove or disprove the existance of God.

OK, all of these ytmnd's are really really ignorant and stupid. Both side s of the argument. You people don't even know what religion is. God does not prove himself, even sometimes he throws out theories which disprove the existance. Why would he do that? Because religion IS faith. God does not want disbeliever in heaven, he wants you to trust him in that ther is a God, without faith, you have science.

You cant explain god and you cant disprove him eather. Debate all you want but in the end you going to be even more confused. you both maid compeling arguments, but in the end your both rong. there are enough holes in both of them to make a necklace. your just going to have to belive what you want and nothing more. -Science and God are worlds apart.

The title is a joke, people. He's just applying elementary logic & semantics to explain the rhetoric and false reasoning used in whetstone's site.

Hmm, ok…some interesting thoughts, but at the risk of creating a thought fractal: Both points are valid. God does HAVE a begging nor does he end, for He is both. So God is the smallest most finite and therefore infinite PART of the UNIVERSE...while at the same time BEING the Universe as well as being apart from it. DO you see the point? IN the Bible it is summed up in these phrases: I am the alpha AND the omega. also: In the beginning, the Word was WITH God, and the word WAS God...through which the Un

As for the recurring question "why do people get get involved in these semantical games?" As I've said before in the previous sites, PRIDE. PRIDE. PRIDE. ARROGANCE. Human weakness. Cure? September 7th, 2006
(0)
i dont think you understand christian or religion in genereal ideology. it claims that god has existed infinitely back into time and will continue to exist infinitely forward into it. not "he created the universe, but what created him?" he has always existed infinitely. the creation and formation of the universe on a religious timescale is a blink, such as the 7 days of creation- a minute and insignificant amount of time compared to a scale of infinity.

im christian, in a sense, nd you get a 5 for me. the reason being, i want people to stop believing that God is a solid existence(or non-existense) and is outside the human world. i dont think i can explain my view in this little box though..
September 7th, 2006
(0)
You're not reading what I'm saying mattman. Your argument requires the causal system to be applied to gods, or allows for acausality to be applied to the universe. Otherwise, your god becomes incoherent and useless to discuss. Who said anything about me being a fan of pokemon now? I have an interest in one and one only...
September 7th, 2006
(0)
Those who 1'd this didn't understood the point of this, IMHO. It's about having fun arguing over the biggest mindf*ck ever. No one can win, it's pointless, but what the hell : it's fun and interesting.
September 7th, 2006
(0)
oh no, there's really nothing too mind boggling about this, this seemed like a fairly good comeback. normally, however, id say, KEEP POLITICS AND RELIGION OFF YTMND. and i'm not critisizing your intelligence, but rather, the way you respond to others points in such a smug and condisending way.
September 7th, 2006
(0)
I would agree with that. The only real problem I have is these attempts to make YTMNDs and sponsor them so they get on the front page. Peterguy and his Evangelical friends seem to be doing this frequently...
September 7th, 2006

Superb.
September 7th, 2006

WIN... and btw... If humans don't have the capacity to understand something as supernatural as a god, why did god write a bible? how can something as natural as a naturally-made language possibly hope to scratch the surface of the supernatural? It can't, therefore all literature, including the bible is fallible and a farce, and I don't see god popping down to add any comments on the subject, since he's the master of all things written.
September 7th, 2006
(0)
I couldn't have put it better myself. It's just like Descartes reasoning for the existence of God. (These Christians, always begging the question). I see you're also a Philosophy student. :D
September 7th, 2006
(0)
I can boil all of this on both sides down to a single paragraph: If the universe started from nothing or had a beginning then something beyond our understanding resided at the nexus of all things. This is God and the universe itself is God. This much is true. Rather it does anything or is intelligent is ENTIRELY F*CKING irrelevant in naming it God. As for assumptions that its intelligent that is based on nothing.

September 7th, 2006

It's very relevant in calling it god. deities are anthropomprhic supernatural entities... if the first cause isn't supernatural and anthropomorphic, it isn't god.

God is dead.
September 7th, 2006

The source of the universe may be beyond our understanding, but it's probably not because of God.

Thank you for this, you didn't try to go all atheist and say God doesn't exist. You merly show that whetstone is a fool. In my opinion you can't prove God's existence or inexistence. Its all on faith, some people have that faith ( I among them ) and some do not. You can't indefinatly prove it either way.

September 7th, 2006

5d. Reason > superstition.
September 7th, 2006
(0)
Actually, the first one is not what is known as circular reasoning. Circular reasoning is where you have two conclusions, both of which depend on the other being true for it to be true. If we assume that it is true that "Everything except God has a cause", then it is absolutely true that the universe had a cause by virtue of its not being God. The problem is that the statement "Everything except God has a cause" has not been proven by any standards at all.
September 7th, 2006
(0)
It's therefore a good argument (it's logically valid), but not a sound argument (the premises are not all known to be true), so it's therefore useless in any sort of practical application.
September 7th, 2006

Nice antithesis Chichiri. Pretty frustrating though reading comments from people who havent quite grasped that this ytmnd isn't trying to disprove the existance of god despite it's title. And Sexyloser, I'd ask you to pull your head out of your own *ss but I suppose its more comfortable for you up there. People are just having a debate, and perhaps people are being introduced to ideas that could be completely new to them, thats a good thing.
September 7th, 2006
(0)
You might also want to revisit the third point, as well - while it's true that the universe isn't a "thing", it can still be argued that the universe would not exist if none of its components existed, and in that case, the universe would come into being if its components came into being. Can't find fault in the second point, though. And just for the record, I don't state that I know that there IS a God. I just think that it's good to play Devil's Advocate on both sides to keep each on their toes. :)

1 for bad theology, bad philosophy, bad science, and absolutely horrible logic. Whetstone uses thousands of years of debate and research to support his thesis (and provides sources, too). You look like you pretty much just pulled your arguments out of your one-sided ass.
September 7th, 2006
(0)
I'm a theology major. I'm submitted to "proof" that God doesn't exist on a regular basis. No true logical debate can end with the disproof of God, but you could have at LEAST made a credible effort.
September 7th, 2006
(0)
All the haters don't offer reasons why they disagree with you other to say that they disagree. I give you 5 stars because you used logic alone to undo his argument. Sure he had sources and research, but that doesn't change his core logic, which you saw through. I still liked his YTMND though, and there are more objections, but good job here.

"Dumb athists and there thinking the universe was created by nothing!" Which is better than thinking God was created by nothing?
September 7th, 2006
(0)
"Whetstone uses thousands of years of debate and research to support his thesis (and provides sources, too)." Sorry, that's an appeal to authority fallacy. The fact that he had sources and that other people have used the same argument does not at all mean in itself that it's more correct than anything else.

No, you didn't, you presented the objection in its weakest form and the refuted it through a rather flippant appeal to god being beyond the scope of your argument. That poorness of reply to the objection is the point of this YTMND.

Great job! Also, to the people who respond with the argument that you can't understand god with reason. If that's true, then you can believe anything you want at all. You're believing in God on a whim with no grounding except your current feelings. These feeling are responses only to irrationality when you claim reason fails at this subject.

The belief in something as compared to the belief in nothing, are both equally meritted... however turning this into a battle of wills and rejoicing in the crushing of other peoples opinions are the very reasons problems arise in the first place. Im directing this mostly towards the unrulely masses of ytmnd, that would rather hear their own opinions repeated and flame any others. Get a life people, seriously. 3
