I think this as well whenever I see these ads. Who would actually be dumb enough to send their gold into someone to have them value it and send back whatever they think it's worth. You're right, though, I wish I had thought of this scam first. Maybe I can con people into sending me their old unused bills and I'll pay them what I think they're worth...
The reason WW2 bailed out the US's economy was because they weren't actually participating in it until the end. They just got fat off of selling war materials to the allies until they were brought into the war not for any sense of decency and loyalty to the guys opposing genocide, but because Japan was stupid enough to attack them and bring their shining new economy into the war effort.
