Honestly, I think Steve Martin started a trend among comics whereby they start with funny, zany comedies then transition into the date film/family feature (becoming necessarily blander in the process of broadening their appeal). Adam Sandler, Eddie Murphy, and Robin Williams more or less did the same thing. But that was then. Now every comic wants a sitcom since Seinfeld and Roseanne showed them how much cake could be made. In any case, stand-up seems more a stepping stone than novel writers looking for screenplay opportunities.
