5'd simply because I used to think like this. There is no 'God' in the sense that people commonly believe. There is no big man up in the sky. We, in my opinion, don't go to heaven or hell when we die. We are simply energy that changes form. If 'God' is anything it's the entirety of reality and the universe around us. My 'educated college friend' tells me that my ideas are not unlike Buddha's concepts, and also run in a 'Gaia theory' kind of vein. I have no idea what the hell he's talking baout half the time
No, I just meant that there was always this fear that we were made to feel of some(one/thing) that was supposed to be benevolent and caring. That's the human factor. I could be afraid of say, my stepdad that beat my *ss when I did wrong, but eventually I grew bigger than him, so I lost the fear. I don't think people ever lose their fear of the unknown. And catholicism totally capitalizes on that for keeping the herd in line, cuz we will never be bigger than God.
But in my opinion, atheists are little emo shmucks that really need to wake up and take a look around them, and appreciate every day that they get to breathe oxygen. Atheists bother me as much as religious wingnuts. I don't agree with organized religion much, as it's simply a time honored control mechanism, but the essential message behind most of them is just to be good to each other, and thats what should matter more than the mythology.
bigmoney, I totally agree with you there. We are not here by chance. And we are probably not alone in the universe either. Even if we are born of cosmic splooge, we share our basic genetic makeup with every living thing.(except those sulphur based life forms they found in those caves in Florida) I like to think I'm not an accident, either. I was also raised Catholic, and being told to feel guilt for simply being was not my cup of tea. So I had to go find my own understanding of 'God'.
One last thing. DNA, that was what did it for me. We share 33% of ours with lettuce. That concept just intrigued me so much, that certain 'switches just need to be turned on' to make me, you, an alligator, or rice. It blew my mind, but it makes so much sense that way to me. I wish I could explain myself better, but when I think about it, my mind just races and thoughts congeal. And if ya can, pick up "The Language Of God" by Dr. Francis Collins. He's the man who mapped the human genome ( also a churchie)
