Well it's likely he didn't see the sniper, if that's what it was. It could have been any soldier with an M4 or an M16. Plus I don't know if he's holding an AK, hard to see. If he is the magazine is quite small. With enough practice and a well-made rifle the AK can do rather well at moderate distances. If he had instead a Dragunov or SKS (can't tell) he could do better.
