Answer: The lava would likely melt the bomb casing and trigger the nuclear reaction near the surface, directing most of the energy downwards into the volcano, rather than out the top of it.

In other words, it's unlikely it would have even worked. If it did though, a normal bomb would be just as effective and cost a small fraction to build.
